Default openSUSE 12.1 with KDE3 and KDE4 applications

    Hi!

I am about to install openSUSE 12.1 on a laptop. I want to use it mainly (or entirely) with the KDE3 desktop but I still want to be able to run KDE4 applications under KDE3. In the past, I have done this with openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4. During installation of 11.3 and 11.4, I selected KDE4 as the default desktop. Then I added the KDE:KDE3 repository and installed all the packages to properly run KDE3 following more or less the recommendations given here:

    http://forums.opensuse.org/english/g...-5-11-4-a.html

This has worked perfectly and I was even able to use the oxygen theme in KDE3. For example, okular and vlc came with the nice oxygen theme even when running under KDE3.

My question is: Is this procedure going to work also with openSUSE 12.1 or is there anything in particular I have to pay attention to?

    Thanks!

there are a few folks who drop in here from time to time who can
probably answer your question...but, i think you will make contact with
them a lot quicker via the communications channels listed in the KDE3
    page in the wiki, http://en.opensuse.org/KDE3

suggest you join their mailing list, and ask there..

It should, but I have not tried.

I have found that installing KDE 4 still can be used with selected KDE 3 applications. Further, if a KDE 4 substitute exists, you need to use the KDE 4 version. In general, sticking with KDE 3 is like swimming upstream. Its not impossible, but if you elect to use the KDE 3 desktop as primary, you will be just one update away from disaster. Of course, this is just my opinion and I wish you only the best, but consider the issue carefully and good luck.

Sorry, I don't understand the issue. I have used KDE3 as the primary desktop on 11.3 and 11.4 for a few years now. I have not had a single problem even after updates. KDE3 is very stable and easy to use. There is a large number of people who use it as their primary desktop. In fact, it is now officially supported in 12.1.

it is officially supported in the KDE3 mail list..

as i wrote earlier "there are a *few* folks who drop in here from time
to time who can probably answer your question"--i didn't write it, but
the fact is that those with the answers you seek are not here routinely..

so, if you want a fast answer you can understand you need to be on that
    list..

or, if you want a fast understandable answer here, you (someone) need(s)
to encourage more KDE3 users/developers to hang out here..

To expand, my use case is different: I use gnome with some kde 4 apps and some kde 3 apps. I
don't use either environment directly. But from what I have read both run just fine in 12.1.
Some recommend to install another desktop first, then kde3 later, because there is no pattern
    to click and install simply.

    Read here for more info:

What I did on an old machine months ago was:

Run the openSUSE installer (12.1 in my case) and then the desktop
selection comes up in the setup choose "other" and then "minimal X".
After install just used the one click installer for kde3
http://en.opensuse.org/KDE3 (which is also the page given by Carlos)

    http://download.opensuse.org/reposit.../openSUSE_12.1
    (the KDE3-DEFAULT.ymp)

kde4 applications can be installed in the kde3 desktop and work (I have
not tried oxygen for kde3 applications though).

This system works till today and regular updates with bugfixes and
improvements for kde3 flow in from their repo, it is under active
    development still.

    Hi,
You may try openSUSE 12.1 KDE3 desktop – SUSE Gallery (or anything similar you may find on SuseStudio).
Please feel free to clone, add/remove repositories or install/remove whatever application you want.

    Regards,
    Catalin

Oh Joy! Upgrading stepwise to 12.1 (from as far back as 11.1) without
breaking all that much. My low end DE is LXDE when i can't have KDE3.

    ?-)
