    Default Frozen UI

    Hi,

Thanks in advance for any help - its needed... big time!

    I am running 11.4.

I think i installed an update yesterday (cant remember if this was pkg manager or online update) but machines GUI is frozen - i cant click or interact with anything.

Well * some * things i can, but mostly, nothing works - e.g. i can launch a browser, but not use it. I can launch a file manager, but i cannot click / interact anywhere.

Its like a transparent shield is over everything since the update.

Its rendered my system completely unusable.

Any help or advice is very much appreciated.

    Regards, Sam

i am running 11.4 and there were no new updates that flowed into the
update repo yesterday...so, i wonder how long it had been since your
    last update?

and, i wonder how you updated? that is, did you use YaST Online Update,
or zypper? and if zypper what was the exact command you used?

i also wonder what desktop environment (and version) you are using..

and, what repos do you have enabled and refreshed..

oh, and if you can boot from a Live CD (or run level 3), why not show us
    the output from

    Code:
    tail -n25 /var/log/zypp/history
oh, and if you boot to run level three, run yast and add a new test
user, and then see if you can boot to a GUI with that user..

So, is this KDE or GNOME? Did you know you can run yast from a terminal session to uninstall applications? Try Ctrl-Alt-F1 to open a terminal session and log in as root if you can get terminal to run in your desktop. You can run one of the following terminal commands to see all applications installed.

    For an Alpha Listing:

    rpm -q --all | sort | less

For an Last installed List use:

rpm -q --all --last | less

The symptoms sound like you have a modal dialog box open, but presumably
hidden behind other windows. Have you tried logging out and back in? Can
you use the mouse when you're not logged in?
