    I installed the dynamic static version. It seems to work. Here's how:

    1. Download the archive (skype-4.0.0.7.tar.bz2).
    2. In Yast, uninstall the previous version of skype (if necessary).
    3. Unpack the archive you downloaded from skype somewhere.
    4. As root (meaning, use su) copy the executable "skype" to /usr/bin.
    5. As root (meaning, use su) copy all the directories to /usr/share/skype.

    That's all there is to it.

    I have upgraded to 12.1. Now Skype works.
