Thread: Need a strategy to upgrade to KDE 4.8

Question Need a strategy to upgrade to KDE 4.8

    Hi!

I run SUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6.5. I use kwin, with nvidia's proprietary driver. The laptop has been configured this way since shortly after 11.4 came out, and it's stable and really quite OK.

Recently, I got to hankering about upgrading kde to 4.8. I backed up the partitions with clonzilla, added the 4.8 repositories from this post, unchecked all the other repositories in yast, and did a zypper dup. That *seemed* to go fine, and the laptop booted up into kde with trouble.

But then, it turned out that nothing worked. Any attempt to open anything or click on anything resulted in a frozen system requiring. I rebooted a few times, logged into a console and renamed ~/.kde4, but that only changed the theme and didn't solve the problem.

So, I reinstalled my prior partition images and am back to kde 4.6.5. I'm thinking about taking a second stab at it, but I would like to know what I did wrong this time around. Thoughts?

    Look at this
KDE 4.8> for openSUSE 12.1 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

    Just use 11.4 repos instead

    OK. First question:

Is there supposed to be no kdebase4 in 4.8.2?

I don't have it, but it's not in 12.1 which I use or the updated kde4.8.2

Your screen doesn't provide details of the supply repo etc

You should enable and refresh only the following

    11, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 25, 26

OK. Thanks for that. But then to proceed with the update, should I just issue a "zypper dup" with those repositories enabled? Is there anything else I should do first, like renaming kde folders or something? Should I go back in yast and remove the packages that don't update, like kdebase4?

Use the switcher method as shown in the guide.

OK. Did that. Just for safety I also turned off Desktop Effects and set the desktop theme to Air prior to doing the upgrade.

I would say that it went well. KDE was working after the upgrade, at least to the extent that I tested. I then went to turn on Desktop Effects and that was where things went south. In essence, kwin had issues repainting the Desktop, which made it appear that nothing was happening when I clicked on things. I guess this is the problem I had the first time around.

I got Desktop effects turned off and decided to try upgrading my NVIDIA driver. I've been using version 260 installed "the hard way" with suse 11.4 for reasons that I no longer remember. I went ahead and installed version 295 the repository, but something didn't work out with that, I ran out of time, and reverted to KDE 4.6 to do some research.

It turns out that there are some issues with kwin and nvidia, so I am currently investigating. I'm sure I'll take one more crack at this before I give up.

Is this the third try? I think it is. As they say, the third time is the charm. KDE 4.8.2 is up and running.

What I did differently this time is, prior to attempting the update, I installed (the hard way) the newest NVIDIA driver (295.40) and verified that was working fine. I then turned off Desktop Effects and proceeded with the update. Upon completion, I verified that KDE was working and then turned on Desktop effects, although to be safe, I left Blur turned off. Having verified that *that* worked, I turned on Blur. I've got the "Safe" box checked in Blur settings, and all is working.

In essence, I am happy. Thanks to caf4926 for the patient advice.
