Default Problem with NFS/NIS and network settings

    Hello

With older versions of OpenSuse (apparently 10.2 and older) it was no problem to change the network settings (through yast). The system would reconfigure the network and even though my home directory was on the server (with NIS client and automount) I could go on working as nothing happened.

I later upgraded to 11.2 and recently to 12.1. I observed that every time that I change some network setting, my session gets frozen and I have to reboot. The same happens if I use the command "rcnetwork restart" (as root). I could run this command before as many times as I wanted without any problems.

What is going on? Is there any way to get the old behavior? I also suspect, that this problem causes the suspend mode to fail.

    Thanks for any help!

Exactly what settings are you changing?

Also, nowadays except for the most basic interface configuration most network settings are controlled by Network amanager (assuming you're running NM and not ifup/ifdown).

If running NM I also stop/pause/restart network, wireless and DUN services using the GUI instead of the CLI

Well, it doesn't seem to matter what I change. A simple change will do, say just a new hostname. Even if I go through the menus an press finished or ok at the end, this seems to happen. I also suspect that the problem is related somehow to the Network Manager. What can I do?

Report in bugzilla and perhaps in a year or two it will be corrected.

Something to look at, may be affecting you:
When I use NFS shares mounted by hostname, and names change (updates, reloads, etc), I often have problems propagating the new hostname to my router.
Perhaps your reboots are resolving that for you?
If your server (location of /home) has a static IP, try mounting via that IP rather than name.
