No, with traditional network setup you can hibernate the machine while
there is an active mount via nfs.
For me, STR (suspend to ram) has worked well recently on 11.4 and 12.1, on both desktop(traditional network setup ifup) and laptop(network manager for wireless support), with NFS shares mounted.
It occasionally has issues on new release or kernel upgrade - I usually test with live disk before upgrading and wait for issues to sort out.
I generally don't try STD(hibernate).
