STR (sleep/suspend-to-ram) not working after KDE 4.8.1 update

I have a laptop running 12.1_64 and recently updated to KDE 4.8.1.

Linux HPDV7-Linux.capenet 3.1.9-1.4-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jan 27 08:55:10 UTC 2012 (efb5ff4) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The 12.1/KDE 4.7, then KDE 4.8.0 install was about three weeks ago.
Has run well, including Suspend (to RAM) function.

Since the KDE 4.8.1 update 3 days ago, Suspend fails.

In /var/log/messages, I see plasma-desktop and krunner refusing to sleep

I also see that /var/log/pm-suspend.log has trash - looks like a binary dump, then a few lines from the restore process.

I did not find much here on SuSE Forum relating to this.
A Google search found that, interestingly, other distros were reporting issues with KDE 4.8.0 not suspending correctly, with reports that KDE 4.8.1 had a fix for the issue. My results are just the opposite!

At the moment, I am guessing that there is an issue with interface to the kernel and that the other distros were ahead of SuSE 12.1, will head off to check some more.
My laptop is running ATI Catalyst 12.1, I don’t have a reason to suspect it is a display driver issue but can’t see the suspend info in /var/log/pm-suspend.log to verify that.
I do know that KDE 4.8.1 suspends just fine on a SuSE 11.4 desktop, also running Catalyst 12.1 but obviously an older kernel(2.6.37-6).

Can anyone report success suspending 12.1(kernel 3.1.9-1.4)/KDE 4.8.1?

similar trouble here, same openSUSE, kernel, and KDE versions, with nvidia
graphics (295.20). started after a recent update to KDE, couple of days
ago. my /var/log/pm-suspend.log is even more cryptic. it starts with
“redirecting to systemctl,” then follows something that looks like a
binary dump, and at the end

/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/06autofs suspend suspend: success.
Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/30s2disk-check suspend suspend:

/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/45pcmcia suspend suspend: success.
Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/49bluetooth suspend suspend:

/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/49bluetooth suspend suspend: success.
Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/50rcnetwork suspend suspend:

i was calling “pm-suspend” from the command line (as root), and that
process got stuck without any output until i killed it with ctrl+c.

phani.

phani - you pm-suspend.log looks same as mine.

FYI, I ran an update just now that seems to have fixed whatever the problem was/is:

From YAST, I chose to “update all if new version available” for repository @system

After this, I logged out/logged in (to restart KDE) and suspend worked.

Interestingly, /var/log/pm-suspend.log is still garbage

interesting; i ran update today, too, but still can’t suspend. perhaps my
mirrors are behind yours, and/or the fact that i’m using
KDE:/Distro:/Factory makes a difference. i don’t have excess free time now
and can live without beingable to suspend, so i’ll just wait a while
longer. if this continues, i’ll have to look into bug reports eventually…

phani.

It would appear that I spoke too soon - on second attempt to suspend, krunner once again refused to suspend, so problem still exists but in different flavors; much more fun to debug.

I can partially confirm that. An AMD Vision notebook wouldn’t suspend with 3D effects enabled in 4.7.x, had crappy performance with 4.8.0, but is excellent with 4.8.1 updated a couple days ago - and sleeps/restore with effects enabled.

Other issues that I haven’t checked yet were 1) restoring not working if lock-session-on-restore enabled, and 2) only one restore would succeed, if sleeping again, on restore I get a kernel panic (blinking caps-lock light) and even a reboot wouldn’t work, I had to remove the battery. Edit: just tested now, and it is still panicking on the second restore.

openSUSE 12.1 KDE 4.8.1 “release 481” kernel 3.1.9-1.4-desktop
AMD E-350 CPU, Radeon HD 6310, fglrx driver 8.93.4

Well, bummer.
I have a desktop machine (Nvidia graphics) that has been my 12.1 playground, tried to use it to gather good evidence for a KDE bug report.
This machine, Suse 12.1 running KDE 4.8.0 suspends to ram (multiple times) just fine.
I’ll add that the suspend log file in /var/log/pm-suspend.log is garbage (with KDE 4.8.0), so perhaps that issue is unrelated.

For reference, this is what I consider to be a “good” /var/log/pm-suspend.log, this from a system running 11.4/KDE4.8.1

Sun Mar 11 18:19:41 EDT 2012: Finished.

So, for the moment, I’ll conclude that the log file issue is a 12.1 issue, but I don’t have a 12.1/KDE 4.7.0 to verify that claim.

Anyway, after update to KDE 4.8.1, my test system also suspends to ram just fine, multiple times without the crash side effects noted by phani and brunomcl.

I am wondering if (wireless) laptops running Network Management are part of my laptop issue, only because other (google search) results indicated Network Management interactions. My well-behaving desktops (12.1/KDE 4.8.1 and 11.4/KDE 4.8.1) both use ifup by default and there is no wireless hardware to manage.

Tomorrow I’ll log a KDE bug with the best info I can gather, although it feels a bit random at the moment.
I have already searched the KDE bug list, don’t see anything like what I am experiencing with laptop.

I opened SuSE Bugzilla 751811 on the issue of bad /var/log/pm-suspend log with 12.1.
I have a desktop that still suspends and resumes OK with 12.1/KDE 4.8.1, so the issue is not fatal but does make debugging more difficult.

I have yet to resolve issue with my laptop(also 12.1/KDE 4.8.1) that will not suspend.
That is likely a separate or somewhat related issue.

I have developed some experimental evidence that the laptop not suspending issue is related to NFS shares I mount at boot via /etc/fstab.
I edited /etc/fstab, commented out all the NFS shares that I normally mount on boot, then rebooted.

I can now suspend the laptop from the launcher icon. I have done 3 suspend-resume cycles so far, the machine seems OK when resumed.

The log file issue remains - see Bug listed above.

It would appear that the combination of Network Manager and open NFS shares is the issue (my laptop configuration).
My 12.1 desktop test machine runs ifup for networking and suspends/resumes OK with open NFS mounts.
Both of these machines are 12.1/KDE 4.8.1.

i don’t have any NFS shares, and still suspend doesn’t work for me, with
the same symptoms you describe. couldn’t log into novell’s bugzilla for
some reason – either there’s problem with the server’s authentication, or
my notoriously unreliable internet provider is at fault. have to try again
later…

>> /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/49bluetooth suspend suspend: success.
>> Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/50rcnetwork suspend suspend:
>>
>
> i was calling "pm-suspend" from the command line (as root), and that
> process got stuck without any output until i killed it with ctrl+c.

I have that same problem on 11.4 since yesterday, when I did an update
(patch). I did no KDE update. It gets stuck with the network script. I
temporarily moved the script to another directory, and pm-hibernate
succeeds.

When I get back home I'll have a better look.

ah, thanks; i'll do that myself. i tried with sysvinit instead of systemd,
but while this doesn't garble the log entry, it also ends after calling
the network script.

Ok, I did that and saw that it is beyond me. I reported the issue as “Bug
751887 - Hibernation failure after security patches applied.”

For those having the problem of failure to hibernate, /and/ you are not
using automatic IP (traditional method), remove temporarily the script
“/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/50rcnetwork”. Make a backup first if you want.

The problem is not that script, but one called by it, I haven’t tracked
which one.

For those using dhcp, I dunno. You might remove the script, and do
“rcnetwork restart” when you come back.

They ask if you are using systemd or systemv. Please post on the bug.

after an update to pm-utils (from the 12.1 update repo) today, pm-suspend
works again on my system!

Showing that you had a different problem, unrelated to the one reported on
this forum thread.

don’t think so; there’s differnt people on this thread, apparently with
different problems, and mine was one of them that got solved now. others
seem to have (had) the same problem, and i’d be surprised if those
(cmgrath5035) haven’t be solved in the same way.

Only one: The OP, cmcgrath5035.

Then you said you had a similar problem, but isn’t. The OP problem is
related to NFS, which is a known problem with hibernating.
