Thread: How to recover this (kde crash)

Default How to recover this (kde crash)

    Dear all,
I was using kde while all windows dissapeared. I think the problem is caused with the kwin
if for example I launch kwin and the kill it again... the lost windows appear again

(the virtual desktop is lost so all windows appear to the same "window")

please have a look in the screenshot here how the windows look like

ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting

my guess is that while I was working kwin crashed and the new one that started automatically just replaced the old ones..

How I can recover from this error? I can not afford a restart as I need the applications running.

I am running kde 4.7.2 (release 5) with 12.1 opensuse.

I would like to thank you in advance for your help

I am not sure if that improves the situation you have on that screen but
    you can try a
    Code:
    kwin --replace &
in a terminal like konsole or xterm and see if it is better then.

Nope.. it just "covers" everything (like starting a new session) .. new applications can be launched but the old ones are not any more visible.

    Try use the command
    plasma-desktop

Then I have no idea. When I start kwin with the --replace parameter it
just restores all existing windows and their decorations as it is
    supposed to.
It looks then as if your problem is not a crash of kwin but something
    else crashed.

When you press ctrl+alt+del in kde the logout dialog should come up,
    does this work?

    Hi,
    Try this two commands
    Run this command first
    Code:
    kquitapp plasma-desktop
Then after you run the first command
    run the command
    Code:
    plasma-desktop
People who do not break things first will never learn to create anything

I have bookmarked this page as I think I am gonna use it in the future. I kept working with the new kwin --replace session and after some time all the windows were restored back (something like 30 mins).... In that case my problem is temporarily solved... I am quite sure though that I will have to visit this page again.

    Regards
    Alex

You should of course search for the root cause why that happens to you
to avoid this problem in the future (maybe a problem with your graphics
    card/driver or similar).
