Thread: Anyone uses Kcm-qt-graphicssystem?

  1. #1

    Default Anyone uses Kcm-qt-graphicssystem?

    As the title says.
Are there any advantages/disadvantages of shifting to and from
    X11(X11/XREnder) to raster or opengl(experimental)?

Right now I tried using raster and looks plasma is lighter.
I tried opengl it works while I am still login, but upon
reboot, plasma refuses to start (crash if it is the right word)
This is in kde 4.8 opensuse 12.1

Thanks in advance for your pointers.

Messages please, as in the logfiles / errormessages. Are you able to restore access to KDE ? Or are you just looking for those answering the title-question affirmative ?

    Thanks for your reply.
My main purpose is some pointers regarding the disadvantage/advantage of using those three in my first post.
To answer your question if I can restore access to KDE, it is yes and no. Yes partly because I can login and no
because after login it is unusable because kde is frozen. That only happens with the option OpenGl in the
kcm-qt-graphicssystem which is noted as experimental.
Take note that this is different from the OpenGl using the desktop effects which works nicely here.
I can choose raster in the kcm-qt-graphicssystem and use OpenGl for the desktop effects at the same time.
I think their functions are two different things, that's why I am trying to ask it here since more opensuse users
run kde in their machines and on top of that I know, there are lots of knowledgeable members here.

Hi, are you sure you configured it right?

I started using it four month ago. nothing wrong happens.

QT graphics system is a tool to take software rendering work from X11 to QT 4.8. it can be done by adding some configure options into programs' exec line. X11 is not in good design for software rendering, so using QT it will free a lot of cpu time and memories.

my repository contains it. if you install it manually, I suggest you try prebuild RPMs.

    Hi,
Thanks for your time replying to this thread.
Is the package Kcm-qt-graphicssystem from the kde extra repo not enough?
I appreciate you offering your own package and I might try to install it.
Will it run also in kde 4.8?

I did some searching also regarding the Kcm-qt-graphicssystem and found an informative site
and maybe I learned a bit about it. Here are the links:

I'm not sure, kde series repositories prefer using scm service to fetch git for fast development, I'm not sure its version, like whether it's stable or not. once I use choqok from extra. I can't compile protocol plugin against it.

As I can tell, my kcm-qt-graphicssystem package is the 1st occured one in build service.

no it's against 12.1 standard and Factory snapshot. actually I didn't face any problem when I fist installed kcm then updated kde, not automatic request to remove it. so seems it involved little with kde, although it is called a kcm module. actually I think it relies on QT >= 4.8 more than kde.

I reviewd your initial post again. and you said raster is good for you. but opengl is bad for you. personally I didn't try opengl, (or I tried, failed even with existing login then dropped it. don't remember). but as it says experimental, maybe because of Qt and opengl, not the kcm module itself...so don't bother to fix it or find out why, you will find you need an encyclopedia and still wonder...

I am trying to use opengl on a per application basis by adding the graphicssystem option
    Thanks again for your inputs.
