Default mysql slow when using default my.cnf configuration with innodb

    Hi.

On opensuse 12.1 with mysql 5.5.16 and leaving my.cnf untouched it uses innodb for newly created databases, with mythtv I discovered that this is incredible slow, setting default-storage-engine = myisam solved it. But I've heard innodb should be faster, what could be wrong here?

Not necessarily, have a look here: MySQL Engines: InnoDB vs. MyISAM – A Comparison of Pros and Cons

    or here: http://www.mikebernat.com/blog/MySQL_-_InnoDB_vs_MyISAM

do you have enough RAM for innodb?

You could try also mythtv's db optimization tool: Category:MySQL - MythTV

    Cheers.

Also, if you read the deffault my.cnf, you will find an instruction to uncomment a dozen or more lines if using innodb. If you really mean the default my.cnf, this is not set up for innodb.
