Thread: Can only have one application on KDE desktop.

  1. #1

Default Can only have one application on KDE desktop.

System is openSUSE 12.1 fully patched; quad core i5 processor.

I can only have one application running at any one time; for example if I open dolphin I cannot open firefox, thunderbird, calculator, konsole etc; if I shut-down dolphin I can then open any of the other applications mentioned; once an application is running a second application cannot be started. I do not know what trigger the failure mode.

I have set-up a second login; this account behaves as expected i.e. I can open any combination of applications at the same time; this suggests (to me) a corrupted KDE configuration associated with the account exhibiting the failure mode.

    Where do I start looking?

    Thanks in advance for suggests

yes, sounds like something in your original /home is broken..
did it ever work correctly since 12.1 was installed?

if so, what happened, what changed, what was installed etc just before
    this strange new behavior started..

that is, i'm not sure it is something in /home/[you]/.kde

have you maybe edited ~/.bashrc ?
or, have you edited any other hidden file (one beginning with a .) in
your home directory??? if so, compare the contents of it in your
original...whatever is different in the two is _probably_ the problem..

if you have not edited any of those what you could TRY is to log in to
the old home, open dolphin and rename /home/[oldyou]/.kde to
/home/[oldyou]/.kdeBAK, then shut down dolphin, log out and then log
back in as the old you...

doing that KDE will build a new /.kde which will be exactly like it was
the first day it was born (and the one in your test user)....which means
all of your customizations are lost....BUT, it also means that one of
your customizations is what _caused_ the problem...so, rebuild your
desktop very carefully and slowly...log out and then back in often and
when you see the strange behavior again you will know what caused it
(because you will know what you changed just before you lost the ability
    to multi-task)..

and, you find the cause please tell us--because i have never heard that
    symptom before...

This is of course a very strange thing. You say that you "cannot open firefox, thunderbird, calculator, konsole etc", but you fail to say how you do that and what happens that you advertise here as failing.

And did you e.g. start a terminal (which is then the only one application running) and start from there a second application. What does the terminal say then?

And when it is is your KDE 4 configuration, there is one simple method to get rid of it in a way similar to your test user. Remove ~/.kde4. And you wil get then a fresh one on login (like your test user). But it will of course also remove al your personal settings done earlier.

To do this, log out of the desktop, do Ctrl-Alt-F1 and you will get to the system console, which has a login prompt. Log in as the user and do
    Code:
    mv .kde4 kde4-saved
log out and do Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get to the GUI login. Login and check.

You have now still the old KDE 4 environment in kde4-saved. You could use it to reverse what you just did. You can also look in there in different files to see what you had earlier when yoou ae re coinfiguring your KDE 4 enviroinment to your liking.

It has generally been fine (note#1) since I installed (pre Christmas) up until a couple of day ago. I believe that the only applications that I ran on the day it went wrong where Opera and Thunderbird; the only things I normally do through that account are Web browsing (firefox/opera), Email (thunderbird) and chess (FICS using XBoard). I will try kde config directory rename to force kde to start afresh.

Note#1: on both laptop and desktop dolphin occasionally locks-up for 30-60 seconds; I cannot associate this lock-up with any particular directory or opening any particular file; it's a mystery.

One other thing to note is I did install 12.1 as an upgrade to 11.4; as opposed to doing a clean install.

If I open a terminal and then try and launch another application from the terminal context I get the following error message:

    Code:
Maximum number of clients reachedMaximum number of clients reachedError: cannot open display: :0

The renaming both .kde and .kde4 directories didn't work; so the problem isn't in the kde configuration.

Were you logged out when renaming the folders? If so, then I can only think of one other option: the .config folder in your homedir.

I was only logged into a non-gui session when I moved the folders.

i would like to see the full input and output, from prompt to prompt,
    like this:
    [code]
    denverd@linux-os114:/> dolphin
    denverd@linux-os114:/> firefox
    *** nss-shared-helper: Shared database disabled (set NSS_USE_SHARED_DB
    to enable).
    denverd@linux-os114:/>
    [code]

and, you say you upgraded from 11.4 to 12.1, which of these supported
    methods did you use:

    http://tinyurl.com/6kvoflv

and, if you open YaST > Security and Users > User and Group Management
and then create a new test user and password, then log out and log back
in as the new test user...can you use more than one app at a time?

what version of KDE are you using and can you please show us the
    terminal input/output from

    Code:
    zypper lr -d
for both of those requested terminal sessions please copy/paste the
*input* & full *output* back to this thread using the instructions here:

OK, just making sure. Did some googling, did you activate any "minimize to tray" options in FF or Thunderbird? Found quite a lot of bugreports on that resulting in the phenomenon you describe.
