opensuse v12.1
linux 3.1.9-1.4-desktop x86_64

I did a fresh installation of v12.1 over a slightly damaged v11.4 (there were stability problems). The initial installation went well; I then let it perform all of the updates to date. It hung during boot after the updates. So I "updated" the installation to revert to the original 12.1 state which did boot.

I have finally narrowed down which update causes the hang: 2012-21 (an NTP fix of some sort). It, however, is only a symptom.

After the initial installation I added all of the additional programs and services that I use; among others, NFS, NTP, Apache2, MySQL, and others. These started with no problem.

After some of the updates (now, all except 2012-21), the "network" service refuses to start at boot time. It refuses to start for some amount of time after boot, 2 - 5 minutes. Then all is well. Until the next restart.

Here is a sample error message from dmesg. There appears to be one such entry for each service that cannot start because network did not start, about 18 total.

Code:
Feb 5 12:49:11 sma-station14l dbus[1134]: [system] Activation via systemd failed for unit 'dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service': Unit dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service failed to load: No such file or directory. See system logs and 'systemctl status dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service' for details.
Feb 5 12:49:11 sma-station14l dbus-daemon[1134]: dbus[1134]: [system] Activation via systemd failed for unit 'dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service': Unit dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service failed to load: No such file or directory. See system logs and 'systemctl status dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service' for details.
And from systectl status:

Code:
$ systemctl status dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service
dbus-org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.service
	  Loaded: error (Reason: No such file or directory)
	  Active: inactive (dead)
What has broken?

Code:
$ /etc/init.d/network status
redirecting to systemctl
