Yes, I booted the KDE Live CD. I'm downloading the GNOME one now, though.

If you run the long test, it might take two hours or more, depending on the size of your HDD. Just to let you know.

Ok, thanks for the heads up. Is there a shorter one, though? Would it be less effective? What exactly am I looking for? Sorry for all the questions!

Warning: palimpsest can not run the test on every type of disk. For
example, it refuses to test any of mine.

    Yes, the short test.

    Of course!

Notice that if you run the smart test on a running system, you can continue
your work, the test is more or less transparent.

You don't know what you're looking for at this point. You just noticed that your system freezed and didn't restart... Did it? So you're trying to find out why. A surface test is a way to know if the hard disk is damaged. If it has bad sectors, then you will have the answer.

No it still won't boot. I'm on the GNOME Live-CD now, though, but I can't find a way to open the terminal LOL. God I hate Gnome 3...

    *EDIT*
Got it, but the command just opens the disk utility, what do i do from here?

    *EDIT 2* Got it.
