Thread: 12.1 error with HP Laserjet P3010

Question 12.1 error with HP Laserjet P3010

I have recently removed opensuse 11.4 to install 12.1 on my Dell Inspiron 6400. However, on 12.1 i am unable to install HP Lasejet p3010 connected over network (which worked perfectly on 11.x series). I have used hp-setup as root from terminal and the errors I get are:
    ************************************
    Found device: hp:/net/HP_LaserJet_P3010_Series?ip=192.168.50.184
/warning: No PPD found for model laserjet_p3010_series using new algorithm. Trying old algorithm...
error: No PPD found for model laserjet_p3010 using old algorithm.
error: No appropriate print PPD file found for model hp_laserjet_p3010_series
    ************************************

Then I opted to browse for the ppd file and clicked the browse tab on the graphical interface of hp-setup. This yielded the following error messages on the terminal:
    **************************************
klauncher(5206) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you have started the DBUS server.
kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
    .
    .
.startkdeinitlock(5196): Couldn't start knotify from knotify4.desktop: "KLauncher could not be reached via D-Bus. Error when calling start_service_by_desktop_path:
    Not connected to D-Bus server
    ****************************************

Can anyone kindly help sort this issue?
    Thanks

How did you run as root?
    Use
    Code:
    su -
    do not omit the -

Thanks a lot. I used the - after su. Once more hplip didn't automatically detect the ppd file (which it could do for earlier versions of opensuse) and gave the error:

    Found device: hp:/net/HP_LaserJet_P3010_Series?ip=192.168.50.184
/warning: No PPD found for model laserjet_p3010_series using new algorithm. Trying old algorithm...
error: No PPD found for model laserjet_p3010 using old algorithm.
error: No appropriate print PPD file found for model hp_laserjet_p3010_series

However, the browse tab now worked and I manually selected the ppd file from /usr/share/cups/...

The printer is now working fine. However, it would be enlightening if you could explain how the - after su changes things and why hplip can't find the ppd file by itself.
    Thank you again.

I have somewhat understood the difference between su and su -. However, I earlier used to install printer from yast using hplip which could fish out the ppd file by itself but fails in doing so on opensuse 12.1 (through both yast and hpsetup run as root from terminal). Can anyone please explain the situation. Thank you

Well, not what you want to hear, but I installed a P3010 on 12.1 this morning......Through running hp-setup as root. It was detected and configured like it should be. Could something else be wrong?
° Appreciate my reply? Click the star and let me know why.

Arrow Re: 12.1 error with HP Laserjet P3010

If the problem is related to hplip (and maybe missing dependencies) often
    Code:
    hp-check -r
    will give more information.

    See also:

    for further information/sources of info.

Lightbulb Re: 12.1 error with HP Laserjet P3010

I stopped using the command line to install printers a long time ago. With HP all you need to do is make sure you have the latest version of hplip & hplip-hpijs installed - lokk in YaST and search for "hp". If you have then you can use either YaST or CUPS to install the printer.

Currently I have a LaserJet 2300DN on wire ethernet, and a DeskJet 2050A on wireless. They are shared by this desktop (openSuse 12.1 KDE 4.7) two laptops (Ubuntu 11.04 & Win XP Pro) and a netbook (Ubuntu 10.04 NBR). Also a couple of installs of XP Pro (one on this desktop and one on the Ubuntu laptop) in VirtualBox VM's. All the Linux boxes were done using either CUPS (on Ubuntu) or YaST (Suse) and no command line at all! I'm not against the command line, but if you are using a graphical desktop you should be able to do things like installing peripherals without it.

In fact I find installing printers on Linux with a GUI much easier than on any flavour of Windows up to and including 7, particularly with network printers.
    Best wishes

I indeed used to install printers through yast but I turned to CLI for help when hplip failed this time on 12.1 on my machine.

I ran 'hp-check -r' first after doing su - and the output was:

    Code:
    hp-check -r

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.11.10)
    Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
    1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the
proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
    2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP
supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
    3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time
    dependencies).
