I think if you post the details what exactly you do not understand from
oracles description will result in better answers.

    Thanks Martin!
The procedure out lined there works for Red Hat and the crew: Fedora, Centos, Sicietific Linux, etc , it is not straightforward for other ones! The RPM package intsalls on opensues, but getting to work in tough job!

What does not work for you? I have a oracle 11 xe running on a openSUSE
11.4 as well as a full oracle 11 for development on another virtual
machine with openSUSE 11.4. I'ld say there is no difference to 12.1 from
the point of view of installation, but have not yet done it.

If you already have the rpm installed then run the following
    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure
after you answered the questions (automatic startup, password ...) the
database is created and the services (listener, web interface) started.
Open your browser and go to localhost:8080/apex and administrate your
    instance.

Quickly tested now on a virtual openSUSE 12.1 64 bit (minimal server
installation) and it works the same.

I have done that few times, here is the result :

    /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure

Oracle Database 11g Express Edition Configuration
    -------------------------------------------------
This will configure on-boot properties of Oracle Database 11g Express
Edition. The following questions will determine whether the database should
be starting upon system boot, the ports it will use, and the passwords that
will be used for database accounts. Press <Enter> to accept the defaults.
    Ctrl-C will abort.

Specify the HTTP port that will be used for Oracle Application Express [8080]:

Specify a port that will be used for the database listener [1521]:

Specify a password to be used for database accounts. Note that the same
password will be used for SYS and SYSTEM. Oracle recommends the use of
different passwords for each database account. This can be done after
    initial configuration:
    Confirm the password:

Do you want Oracle Database 11g Express Edition to be started on boot (y/n) [y]:y

Starting Oracle Net Listener...touch: cannot touch `/var/lock/subsys/listener': No such file or directory
    Done
    Configuring database...
Database Configuration failed. Look into /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe/config/log for details

    /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe/config/log # dir

And what is the content of this file?
    Did you inspect it?

/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe/config/log is a directory, inspect all
the files in it for error messages. You can also post the content here,
if it is a lot (in my case the files are short since everything
succeeded on both systems) paste it to susepaste.org and give us the links.

The problem is with Listerner :
Starting Oracle Net Listener...touch: cannot touch `/var/lock/subsys/listener': No such file or directory
    Done
    Configuring database...
Database Configuration failed. Look into /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe/config/log for details

    The files are empty
