12.1 with gnome desktop

I have opensuse 12.1 installed on my laptop and my desktop computers both using gnome. My desktop install seems to work properly, but on the laptop I am not able to right click or add anything to the Desktop. If I add something to the desktop it doesn't appear graphically but if I do an ls in the terminal it is there. Has anyone else seen this problem and have a solution?

You don't state which desktop environment you use, but what you describe
sounds like GNOME3.

In fallback mode, you can add icons to the desktop. In full G3 mode, you
can't - it's a feature of the new "clean" interface. Some people like
it, some don't.

If you want to force fallback mode, go into the system settings (click
your name in the upper-right corner to expose the menu), select "system
info" and then "graphics" and enable the "forced fallback mode".

That'll give you a more GNOME 2-like experience (it's not exactly like
GNOME 2 as applets from G2 won't run).

You may need to install gnome-tweak-tool to enable other specific
features, like having the file manager handle the desktop.
