Thread: YAST won't open up when opened from the kickoff menu

  1. #1

Default YAST won't open up when opened from the kickoff menu

If I click the icon for YAST in the menu, it pops up the password box but then after correct entry, nothing happens. If instead, I start it from the command like like:
    Code:
    su -c /sbin/yast2
then it does start! What's wrong?

I think it might have something to do with sudo, because Dolphin Super User has the same issue.

Some info (in case it's relevant):
my password has spaces and symbols and quotes in it (would that cause an issue?)

these _may_ only work for KDE users, but since you didn't say what you
    use it may not matter:

-right click on the main menu icon (green lizard head)
-left click to select "Edit Applications"
    -left click to expand "System"
    -left click YaST (Administrator Settings)
-copy and paste back to here the contents of the "Command:" field
-close the KDE Menu Editor without making any changes therein

has anyone ever mentioned to you to include your operating system and
version, and desktop environment and version????

Thanks for the help guys. Yes, my entry looks exactly the same.

Sorry about not giving the info before. My setup is:
    Opensuse 12.1
    KDE 4.7.2
    4gb RAM
    2.7 MHz dual core AMD
The grub is actually from Ubuntu and opensuse is booted from /dev/sda2 with home in /dev/sda6 on an extended partition.

    No
    Your Grub is from openSUSE

We installed Ubuntu for you in sda1 (In theory to overcome a uEFI issue, at least we thought so)
Currently Ubuntu is no related to your install at all

    1. Have a look in /var/log/YaST2/y2log for any errors when launched from the icon.

    2. Try creating another user. Does YaST launch properly from that account? If so, go back to the original user account, and
    Code:
    rm -f ~/.Xauthority
then restart X-server, and try again. Any difference?

Oddly, it does not have any errors from when I tried to open via the icon. It only logged stuff from startup.

I also created another user and the same issue occurs there - it also cannot open anything that requires a sudo login popup (the popup shows up, I enter root pass and then nothing).

    could this be relevant?

    also, could this be relevant?

    What's wrong with /usr/bin/xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2

When I check my sys info, it shows I also have the "desktop" kernel. Could that be causing the issue? How would I change to default kernel?

Don't even try changing to kernel default.
And that ref you posted is Old.
And the bug reports not for 12.1

Did you try creating a launcher with the command that works

I know it's not for 12.1 but it is openSUSE and the issue sounds almost exactly the same.

The command that works is "su -c /sbin/yast2" and when I create a kickoff item with that command, it doesn't do anything (other than show the bouncy cursor icon thing). (It also doesn't work if I change it slightly to "/bin/su -c /sbin/yast2")

BTW, I also tried launching YAST from the "Configure Desktop" app (it has an icon there under the "System Administration" tab) and again, it does nothing. I assume it also uses xdg-su.

Is it possible to reinstall xdg-su's package or something? Could I be missing some libs or have them installed/permissioned improperly from install?
