Thread: Changing desktop shortcut icons

    Default Changing desktop shortcut icons

I have a few apps (one that uses Wine and the other 2 that are .jar files) that I have made desktop shortcuts for (these are not in the Plasma area). I wanted to change the icons for them but when I tried, KDE either wouldn't allow this or it just didn't take/save the change. I'm pretty sure that I remember being able to change such icons (in SuSE 10.0 and 11.2) and still be able to launch the app I wanted. (One app is for ArtRage 1.1, and the other is for the FurnitureLibraryEditor for SweetHome3D).

Did the developers take that ability (to change any icon for any app) away from KDE desktop?

    I'm running SuSE 11.4 and my KDE is 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6"

If you look in the desktop folder has an icon been placed there when you installed the app with wine?

I use the activity 'Desktop Icons' anyway so the icons are there.

If you are using the activity 'Folder View' and the folder location is not 'Desktop' then shortcuts will need to be managed manually.
If I were going about it, I'd probably look in the Kickoff menu first and see if the icon/launchers are in the wine menu area.

A little more detail on your settings may help us help you.

That worked. It even had the icon that was used before when I had 11.2.

As for the .jar files, my son-in-law helped me with that. I had been forgetting about putting the command, java -jar before the file name. We put a new entry in the kicker menu for the app and then I was able to use "add to desktop" and now it's there with its custom icon.

Thanks for the reminder about using the kicker application editor.
