Default Two, count 'em two KDE logins at Session

I just installed KDE after running Gnome exclusively. I'm wondering why I have two KDE sessions to select from at login. They both seem to work. Can I remove one somehow? Is one a direct duplicate?

    2 logins
Are they identical? Eg: they might be: KEB64 or keb64 which are different
And do they both contain the same files?

My login to session screen looks like this

    Gnome
    IceWM
    KDE Plasma Workspace
    KDE Plasma Workspace
    LXDE
    OpenBox
    TWM

Either choice of KDE yeilds the same session it seems. Wallpaper is the same, panel placement the same, same everything...

For kde Choose KDE Plasma Workspace
Either one will render the same. There should only be one, but I have seen this before. Just ignore it.

You only need to go there when you want to change the session

Alright. Fair enough. KDE is very cool. I haven't seen it in a couple years.

If you've gotten here because you have the "Two KDE Plasma Workspace session choice entries" problem under openSUSE (12.1, for me), and you would like to get rid of one of them, here is how I did it.

(This requires becoming root and deleting a shortcut from a terminal window. If this makes you at all nervous, I recommend that you not do it and just live with the two entries. Rest assured that they both are EXACTLY identical in their effects.)

Open a terminal window. In there, become root. Then navigate to /usr/share/xsessions. In that directory, I saw a soft link from kde4.desktop to kde-plasma.desktop. I deleted the link kde4.desktop link, and upon my next graphical login, I had only one KDE Plasma Workspace choices under the session type list. (I verified that this was the cause of the duplicate entry be recreating the link. This brought the duplicate choice back.) So far I have experienced no ill effects caused by this deletion.

What is the reason for seeing two instead of one?

A repeated entry on some file, perhaps.

It's a remainder of the earlier KDE4 versions. At first the session was called from kde4.desktop, then they changed to kde4-plasma.desktop. The first one wouldn't work by then after a certain version upgrade. Then they changed the content of kde4.desktop. Report a bug at KDE and they will remove it one of these days.

If you're talking about the session files in /usr/share/xsessions, kde4.desktop is a symlink to kde-plasma.desktop. So both entries should start the same session. You can add/remove the sessions you like in /usr/share/xsessions - or the directory stored in the variable SessionDir in the kdm config file (under openSUSE: /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc).
