Thread: KDE panel seems to freeze up

Default KDE panel seems to freeze up

Hey, I'm new to OpenSUSE and decided to give 12.1 as well as KDE for the first time. I've been noticing that when I minimize, close, and sometimes just am trying to access something from the kickoff application launcher it will freeze up for a few moments. It usually unfreezes and catches up if I wait for a little bit. I'm not sure what's causing it or how to even go about fixing it. It's just slightly annoying since it can sometimes take a minute or so to unfreeze. I've noticed tonight that if I have something pulled up already such as Kopete I can still type in it while the other stuff is apparently frozen. Hopefully some one here can help me get this sorted out because, other than this and another issue I really like openSUSE.

Aright, I'll give that a try and see how it goes. I forgot to mention that Plasma desktop is crashing when I shut down. So, maybe that could be a clue as to what's going on with it.

Okay, I toggled desktop effects off and about 5 minutes later I hit that freeze up again, so that wasn't it.

Are you running a nVidia graphics card? I had the same problem running the open source nVidia driver which is the default driver for OpenSUSE and it was solved by installing the proprietary nVidia driver.

Nope, I believe I have Intel's gm945 integrated. I should have mentioned earlier that I'm running this on a Compaq nc6320 notebook.

Assuming you have auto login disabled, you should
    Disable Auto-Login

Logout and at the the login screen, select the session IceWM, like this:

Try using IceWM for a while. See if it freezes to
FYI: Right click on the workspace will get you a menu in IceWM (It's pretty basic)

I have to disable desktop effects first thing after an 11.3 or 11.4 install and in addition to no desktop effects I remove Compiz with Yast. This doesn't really get to the heart of the problem but it has been a satisfactory work around for me.

as far as i know compiz has never been required for any effects with the
KDE 4.6 you are running...so, now that it is gone try to enable desktop
effects, if you want them... you might smile.
