Flash websites

Hi all, am running open suse 11.4 with everything up to date (firefox 8, flash player 11) but have just a recent update via kpackagekit and saw there was a flash update amoung others for KDE, and thought nothing of it. But now it seems, since it has updated flash, i cannot load any websites that are flash based, so a site like google.com will load fine as it is text based (no flash content), but if i try and load a site like distrowatch (flash content) firefox just crashes.

Anyone else noticing this? any way around this?

I am not noticing any problems here at distrowatch or at other sites with flash.

Note to dht2: he did mention that he was using firefox (with "firefox just crashes").

first thing to do is NEVER user kpackagekit...at the least disable it,
better to do what the helpers here have said for months (read around to
find out): uninstall it (with YaST) and instead run YaST Online Updater
every once in a while (i run it daily, first thing after i boot)..

then, to get your Flash working again:

-use YaST to learn the exact version of flash you now have installed

-write it down somewhere

-then use YaST to uninstall it

-go to http://software.opensuse.org/search

-spin the dial to 11.4

-type in flash, and click "Search"

-look down the list and find the section with the latest number version
_before_ the one you just removed (which didn't work), and

-click on the "1-Click Install" link and follow your nose..

Ok did try the following: went into yast and changed to the version of flash before the current one, but no change, firefox still crashes. Uninstalled flash but still crashing. Uninstalled chrome browser as had installed that a while ago and that was also in the updates, but still crashes. Is there any way of having a look at the crash report and seeing what could be the problem?

sorry! i did not see the "crashes" in your first post!!

the "help" i gave was entirely wrong for a firefox crash...so lets start
over (sorry):

use YaST > Security and Users > User and Group Management to create a
new user (say, named testing) give that new user a nice strong password
you won't forget and then log out, and log back in as the new test user..

try firefox at any flash site..does it still crash?

if yes, then restart it and go into the firefox add-ons (in Tools >
Add-ons) and disable all of them, restart firefox and try a flash site
again...still crash?

if so your system is VERY sick, please show us the terminal input/output
from

zypper lr -d
cat /etc/SuSE-release
uname -a

copy/paste the in/output back to this thread using the instructions

ok have managed to sort the issue out, was as follows:

decided to open a terminal window and proceeded to launch firefox from there (one of the best features of linux for diagnostics), then when firefox was open, loaded a site and firefox proceeded to crash and the following came up in the terminal:


aborting...

GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'apps.gecko-mediaplayer.preferences' is not installed

So now this was great as this gives me a direction to look in, and this could only be an addon as when i tried to load addons windows, firefox would crash. This told me it must be an addon (thanks to DenverD for putting that idea in ). So went into yast and searched for gecko and it showed it has gecko-mediaplayer 1.0.4-1.1 installed, then remembered that i had installed gnome -mplayer for media files and it had installed gecko-mediaplyer as a dependency. So searched for gnome-mplayer and the version installed was 1.0.2 and there was an update to 1.0.4-1.1, so just updated it and relaunched firefox and everything now working perfectly.

I had the same problem but I found that the update to gnome-mplayer 1.0.4-1.1 was being blocked because of a dependency problem. The cause of that problem was that the package gnome-mplayer-lang has been removed from the Packman repo, and so can't be updated. I had to remove gnome-mplayer-lang first before I could update gnome-mplayer.
