What happens if you set your "Local Folders" pointing to your/Mail folder by
right clicking on LocalFolders (Agents Tab of akonadiconsole) and then
choosing Configure Natively. You can specify the folder location.
Then launch KMail and the Local folders should appear there. Add a folder,
restart kmail and the new folder should be there.
Then you can import the old folders in Maildir or Mbox format from KMail's
File>Import Messages and then setting where you want to import them, Next,
and finding the way to where the old folders are
    That worked for me

OK, I delete all old local folders, so akonadi creats his own. After them I follow your solution and import the data (as Kmail directory from ~/Mail) so this runs no (10% after 20 minutes - I think it needs a while). Many thanks for this information -G-

But now the state of the other Points:
IMAP mail servers works in Akonadi since beginning (after change of the Security to SSL and PLAIN) - (do not use the TLS from automatic detection - it's not secure!)
POP mail servers works partly - but after manual changes one after the other works (also change from TLS -> SSL with PLAIN must be done for GMX, WEB.de and 1&1 Mailservers).
SMTP mail servers (send ques) don't work with security settings :-(
I've removed all and created new with the settings which promoted on the actual web pages of the Mailproviders - but it doesn't work.

Generally - the logging also after a start on command line is not good enough to find the errors - are there logs available to have more detailed information what doesn’t work?

    Glad it helped.
Sorry I do not know how to resolve the other problems.

You could delete the current imap agents and create them again in case there
    is some configuration error somewhere.

OK - this is not really a problem - tomorrow I will set up my own IMAP server on my home-server. Than this should be collect all mails and I only use a IMAP Client to work with them.

    'afternoon all,

I have read the previous posts on this thread; thanks in advance to everyone who has offered a suggestion.

    I'm still confused however:

    1) I deleted files as suggested by ulfbart and earlier by edin_suse, but that did not stop the stupid "failed to fetch the resource" message.

    2) I also get prompted with an equally stupid "wizard" that wants to collect personal information. I guess its trying to set up my IMAP account, but there is no place in that "wizard" for me to select the odd ports that our server listens on.

    3) I tried to roll back to Kontact 4.4. That allowed me to get email working again (after 8 wasted hours!) but failed to sort out the address book and calendar. I've since imported the address book contacts, but the calendar is completely DOA with far too many (309!) dependencies to be able to roll it back. That means I'm stuck with a busted wackonadi, and so no calendar for me anymore.

This whole situation is fairly busted and I don't know what I'm supposed to do in order to be able to read my calendar and send email again.

    1) Can someone at Suse provide clear instructions for a fix?

    2) If not then how about I do a clean install of 12.1; will that clean install work?

    3) If I do a clean install of 12.1, will I be able to import all my mail, calendar and contacts or will the new "integrated" PIM components still choke and fail?

    Thanks in hope,
    Tim.

Finally admitted defeat: renamed my home directory; created a new, empty home; and started copying docs from old to new.
I've left nearly all my old kde config behind, save for kwallet.
I kicked off kmail; cancelled the wizard (yea, it's a waste of time); exited and then copied my emails to the newly created ~/.local/share/.local-mail-directory
I also copy/pasted all my filters across into ~/.kde4/share/config/kmail2rc
They went after the [composer] section.
Don't forget to change the value of "filters=" in the [General] section otherwise they'll disappear when you...
    ...start kmail
I then created my email accounts; identities; yada, yada and did "File > Update folder & subfolders" on the inbox.
    All worked perfectly
Best of all, with a completely clean environment for akonadi, nepomuk and strigi, my desktop has stopped burning mips like they're going out of fashion.
    Responsive system again!

Thank you to everybody on this thread for helping me to get my kmail/kontact working again. I have everything working*, All of my mail is recovered, calendar is working* and my address book is functioning very well. Unfortunately, kmail crashes all the time when I unfilter folders and sometimes when I click on folders to view its contents, the folder doesn't actually display its content. I have filed bug reports. I am also very irritated that I don't have tabs for having different folders open AND almost the most irritating "feature" my favorites box is no longer configurable. Instead of a nice list they are in a less readable icon form and will disappear when filter for folders. What are these developers thinking? Why would they remove useful features and introduce issues? What was really gained with kmail2? Is there any way to revert to the more stable and feature-rich kmail1?
If I am going to be spontaneous, I have to plan for it.

One problem I've had since getting kmail2 "working" is that some mails are
empty when retrieved. I fixed this by altering the properties of the "local
folders" folder. On the retrieval tab, select "always retrieve full
messages" instead of "retrieve message bodies on demand." Unfortunately,
this setting gets lost occasionally and has to be re-sekected.

Another fault is that automatic spell-checking doesn't highlight errors - as
you may have noticed. However, this isn't a kmail2 problem but dates back
    several years.

I'm glad to hear your calendar is working but hope you're getting more than
about 10% of reminders working which is as far as I've managed.

I fully agree with your comments on kmail2 but would say the same applies to
Thunderbird. With TB9, you now need several plug-ins to recover features
lost in the "improvement" from TB3 - or was it TB2, I've lost count.

Can confirm I had the problem in the title (as opposed to many of the related effects also discussed).
For ref - workaround was to launch Akonadi Configuration Console, select "Local Folders" resource, enter the path where your mail files (inbox/sent/junk etc) are located, eg:

    /home/<USER>/.kde4/share/apps/kmail/mail/ Kontact/kmail now working again (but boy, i t i s s l o w ! ).

FYI This is listed as bug "kmail terminates during startup with "Failed to fetch the resource collection", issue 259355 on the bugs.kde.org website.
