12.1 Anomalies

Some time back I posted to mention that v.12.1 64 bit Gnome couldn't find my ntfs partitions and libreoffice couldn't save to them, for which I received some advice and a few insults.

So I did a web install of v. 12.1 KDE and that solved the problem. Trouble is, with KDE Wine doesn't work, so I dropped back to 11.4 and Everything works.

First off we are very happy you found a supported openSUSE version that works for you. I still have openSUSE 11.4 on my main PC. However, with current updates to openSUSE 12.1, many people find it works just fine now after several updates. Consider that the latest version of openSUSE is always pushing the limits of new applications and desktops and issues can be present. Finally, as long as openSUSE 11.4 is supported, we will do everything in our power to help if you have a problem and no one is telling you must load the latest openSUSE version. Like many things, time does not stop for us, but continue on forward. Just tonight I have installed the next openSUSE version 12.2 into VirtualBox and it is looking good! Just this year, I upgraded my HTPC, which was running openSUSE 11.3 to openSUSE 12.1 and got my movies working like a champ now, but I did not load it until several months after 12.1 was released. So, its OK to stick with what works for as long as you like. We will post notifications as each openSUSE version comes to the end of its supported life span, but until then, continue using openSUSE 11.4 and let us know if we can help you with any problem that you should run in to.

I tried 12.1 KDE and I would get momentary lockups where windows wouldn't minimize and buttons wouldn't click.
so I went back to 11.4 but then I couldn't get compiz to work with GNOME so I am trying 12.1 again this time with GNOME 3.
I have a GeForce 450 GTS video card, and I am downloading the proprietary drivers for it to see if that was the problem....

I got the proprietary NVIDIA driver installed with the one click method using KDE on 12.1.
I didn't run KDE on 12.1 very long without the proprietary driver so I really can compare using the proprietary driver versus not using the proprietary driver to any degree of accuracy.
I am running the proprietary version of the driver now on 12.1 with GNOME 3, and apparently don't have any issues at this moment.
I am going to reinstall 11.4 and see why I wasn't able to get compiz working with GNOME.
I have done compiz before on 11.4 with the GNOME desktop on a different computer setup.
I didn't get any failures when I installed compiz and the NVIDIA drivers with the one click method using 11.4 so I assume that everything went well.
but I didn't have a composite entry in my log as suggested by the instructions, so that is probably why compiz effects were not working on 11.4.
I will investigate why composite was not working before I start a thread on it.

You are welcome ed_v and I wish for you to post ANY comments you might have if you should use any of the scripts I have written. I desperately need all feedback about any issue you might have. Its the only way to make it better. When you write something, it always works OK for you the author. Whats important is the luck everyone else is having, none the least of which is any and all suggestions you can make. You can not make a truly good script or other application without good user feedback. It is just required and I thank anyone in advance that provides it.

Insults? None that I can see. You got advice, some of which you did not

None that you can see? I'll refresh your memory. Granted, I made a careless mistake. (I copied instructions to a terminal, rather than follow them - guess I was overworked and needed a little more sleep).

Your response was (to paraphrase): Some people are incapable of following instructions and should go back to Windows. Was that helpful? Not in the world I live in, Carlos. (Cada cabeza es un mundo, claro). In the real world, when you tell someone you don't know that he may be incapable of understanding and perhaps should go back to where you (mistakenly) THINK he might have came from, that is an insult; which is why you were called down for it by McDaniels. (You then attempted to justify your impropriety and demonstrated that you have no business even participating in voluntary mutual help forums like this one, since you're apparently incapable of maintaining the minimum degree of respect that ALL of us deserve, regardless of the errors that for whatever reason, anyone can make, occasionally).

I consider the above to be a constructive statement on my part, made with the desire to improve the cultural level of this forum by helping to define what is and isn't adequate posting behavior. When you tell someone to go back to Windows, you should be sure that they are in fact Windows users, which is not the case, since my use of computers began in 1994 (after 4 years of using a dedicated word processer), with OS2: A better DOS than DOS and a better Windows than Windoze.

In fact, Windog isn't even installed on this computer (just Mint, Sabayon and OpenSuse) and I have never purchased a M$ product directly (although some of the notebook computers have come with it installed).

Lastly, I didn't disappear. I simply didn't bother continuing to engage in a useless interchange that had already gotten far off track and was busy doing other things.

So thanks for any help you may have tried to provide, but save the personal insults because they have no place here.

um, I got COMPIZ working on 11.4 with GNOME.
accomplished via the one click installs for both the NVIDIA proprietary and COMPIZ install.
I just had to enable effects.
made a backup of my / partition.
now to install kdenlive and see if it will ever work without crashing.....

I haven't ever done any personal insults here. You saying that I have is a
lie, and I could take it as insulting. >:-)
