Thread: Add/Remove Software and Update fails

  1. #1

Exclamation Add/Remove Software and Update fails

    openSUSE 11.4 KDE kernel 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop

    Packages keep failing to install.

I know my kernel is outdated, but.....let's see what system update tells us. softwaremgmt-201105 PackageKit: Update to version 0.6.14 and various bugfixes, and softwaremgmt-201107 softwaremgmt: Collective Update 2011/07. Results? "Removing a protected system package is not allowed." The update names have little red shields to the left of them. There are no other updates to be installed.

DKMS even freaking fails.... [prolly because of outdated kernel...]
    Parts of Wine fail....
Parts of normal apps fail to the point where I have to sit there and click "ignore" (no other option gets me anywhere)

Running in a VM. Could that be a problem?

Don't use package kit (the updater applet) it's useless.
Tell it not to start at boot.

    Use a terminal and do
    Code:
    su -
    zypper up
Or use the Yast > Software Management

don't use package kit..it is broken from birth..

disable it and use YaST > Online Updater

bad juju! please show us the terminal output from

    Code:
    zypper lr -d
    uname -a
    cat /etc/SuSE-release
    kde4-config --version
copy/paste the output back to this thread using the instructions here:

maybe! depends on the VM/version, host system, resources available to
the VM and its proper setup..

Seems to be doing sumpin, but the percentage is going up slowly. Nooooop, not anymore. After some mumbo-jumbo license agreement, comes up with this.

    Code:
Except as specifically stated in this agreement or a license for
a particular component, TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED UNDER
APPLICABLE LAW, OPENSUSE 11.4 AND THE COMPONENTS ARE PROVIDED
    /var/tmp/TmpFile.gQABf7 lines 1-45/112 38%
Doesn't really seem to be going anywhere...

I can't...I feel like my system is trolling me xD
Now, entering root and typing zypper up just gives me this "System management is locked by the application with pid 8157 (zypper). Close this application before trying again." **** xD

The openSUSE website xD I swear....Linux does not like me. First Ubuntu decided to obliterate me, and now openSUSE...tsk tsk. Even moonos plays games with me.
