DVD to avi or other

We are trying to convert some of our old VHS marketing tapes
to file format and DVD. We ran the tape through a Toshiba
VHS to DVD device and now have it as a DVD. Using K3B and transcode
we are trying to use the Rip DVD function in K3B to format it
as a video file of some sort .avi etc. Problem is that when run
through K3B audio is fine but the picture is just random horizontal
green bars. I assume an encoding issue. Any ideas?

You could just copy the vob files to your hard drive, and then use something like avidmux, or handbrake, or winff or h264enc, or xvidenc or someother app to convert the vob’s to an avi of your selected codec.

In theory that is what transcode is supposed to be doing…it just doesn’t.

Looking into K3b in the Settings>Plugins section there are Video encoders
listed only Audio ones. I think that is where the problem is.

I don’t see any mention of transcode in my post. I don’t use k3b for this purpose so I can not help re: k3b.

FWIW, transcode is an independent application. K3b just makes use of it,
presumably passing the required parameters to it and receiving the feedback.

Interesting is that K3b shows thumbnails of the movie to be encoded/ripped
and it also shows the green bars in the thumbnail…so it’s not lying about
what you are going to get. : )

I am trying handbrake now.

Killed process and installed gstreamer-plugin ffmpeg.
Seems to have worked. Thanks for the tips.
