    Can KDE/KWIN run without Plasma installed?

    No (for KDE), but you can of course replace kwin which is just a window
    manager with another window manager.

    I forgot to add
    kde control panel -> Default applications -> Window manager
    and choose a different one than kwin (of course you need to have another one
    installed, e. g. compiz or metacity)

    KDE-Plasma=KDE3 - still available in the repos
