Thread: keyboard stalling, suse 11.4, KDE, firefox 6.0.2

  1. #1

Default keyboard stalling, suse 11.4, KDE, firefox 6.0.2

    AMD6000 dual core cpu
    4 gigs ddr2 memory
    SUSE 11.4 KDE
    Latest updates

Keyboard stalling wasn't a problem in earlier versions of suse. I'm going to start typing forums messages in mswin then rebooting to linux to paste them. It is taking much longer to type messages. Is there a way to change the priority of keyboard driver to the top of the system? Some other way to fix the problem?

I don't have excess programs running and it's still happening. If try to use kwrite or libeoffice writer, I still get the problem.

I wouldn't mind working with developers to fix it. Rebooting between linux and mswin isn't a problem. I'd prefer if I didn't have to.

I don't understand the problem :-? Please describe. Does it stop
responding? Or responds slowly? Or it appears to stop and then suddenly all
    the letters typed appears?

All users? All desktops? Text mode?

maybe some incorrect settings have been inserted, somehow..

try opening Configure Desktop - Personal Settings > Workspace Appearance
and Behavior > Accessibility, and uncheck _every_ box on all four
    tabs....then click the "Apply" button..

if nothing changes, tell us about your keyboard please:
    keyboard dropped?
    laptop? (make and model)
    desktop? (make and model)
    keyboard had cola/etc bath?
    rack mount? (make and model)
    supercomputer? (make and model)
external keyboard connected by USB? (make and model)
external keyboard connected by PS/2? (make and model)
through a switch allowing connection to two/more systems?
keyboard connected wirelessly? (make and model) [fresh batteries help??]

A delay between what I type and what see, about 1/2 to 3 seconds. Sometimes when I type.

    Firefox 7.0, kwrite, libreoffice.

That has tabs related to the system bell.
    Personal settings->
    workplace appearance
    Accessibility

    No

    desktop? (make and model)

    custom built:
    gigabyte motherboard, AMD 6000 X2 64, 4GB memory, 1 terrabyte drive, 2 dvd rom drives, 1 backup drive(300gb)
Note: can't find specifics on motherboard model.

    No

    >external keyboard connected by USB? (make and model)

Two USB keyboards unknown model numbers, one vaio, one spare mult-media.

    >through a switch allowing connection to two/more systems?

    No

    >does top show any process eating up cpu ticks

Using system monitor, I wasn't able to find anything causing the trouble.

    DOS network attacks? Hacking attacks?

ok, delays while typing into a window for (say) an online mail service,
or a forum (like this one) using firefox can often be because network
latency....not much to do about that..

but, 'stalls' while typing into kwrite or libreoffice has to be
something going wrong in your system...either you have some sort of
hardware problem, or a bios problem, or a software incompatibility, or
    the moon is full...

what i'm saying is there are far too many possibilities to being to find
what is going on....must somehow narrow down the variations...like:

boot from a live CD. expect slow loading of kwrite/firefox/libreoff
(_because_ it has to load from the slower CD, rather than the fast hard
drive) but once it is loaded there should be zero 'stalls' when typing
into kwrite and libreoffice...and, typing into the firefox URL line
should have *no* delays and typing into (say) search blocks, or comments
sections and etc at _most_ sites should have mostly no delays *if* you
have a fast, broadband, wired connection..

but, if on wireless at a hot spot with tons of other folks also trying
to use a limited available stream, you _will_ see delays....noting you
can do about it on your machine (except, MOVE to a better location or
    pay more for faster access)..

so, how does it go when booted from 11.4 live kde cd?

no, you click on "Accessibility" and _then_ see four tabs: Bell,
Modifier Keys, Keyboard Filters and Activation Gestures....UNcheck,
deselect *all* boxes/options on all four of the tabs *within*
    "Accessibility" and then click "Apply"

then do some normal stuff and see if you keyboard stalling has ceased..

are they both hooked up at the same time? if so, unhook one....does the
problem go away? if not, remove that keyboard and plug in the other
    one--is it better now?

    > DOS network attacks?

probably not....how are you attached to the network? is the built in
firewall running? with default settings? are you behind a NAT router?

    > Hacking attacks?

probably not....it would take a LOT of knocking on your firewall door to
slow down your letters arriving on your screen...*LOTS*

Only one USB keyboard plugged in. My spare keyboard is put away. I'll have to find it.

I reinstalled suse. Alright, one problem at time, the terminal window.

When I paste a command like "ifdown eth0". Then press enter. Sometimes, the command prompt will not appear. I have to press a key to get to the command prompt. It will wait for a key press when I don't expect to wait.

    prompt> ifdown eth0[enter key]
    [Ethernet shutdown message]
    [waits for key press]
    [key press]
    prompt>

We need more info on your system, specially the graphics card. Brand and model please. Also, please let us know whether you installed a driver for it.

What happens on the rest of the windows? For example, does the clock applet
    stop changing the seconds?
