Thread: packagekit

    Default packagekit

I just downloaded virtualbox 4.1.2 and installed it, but along with it packagekit downloaded and installed nvidia drivers 275, nouveau drivers and something else. The thing is, I was using manually installed 280 drivers from nvidia.com and this packages were marked as "taboo - never install". Is it a bug, or packagekit is supposed to overwrite package settings?

Wow that is crazy. So I installed VirtualBox using Oracle's repository:

    Code:
And I had no such problem when I installed it. Since the installation, I have installed kernel 3.1-rc6 and nVIDIA beta driver 285.03, but I don't think this has any bearing to the problem you describe. Were you able to recover your original setup and still use VirtualBox 4.1.2?

I have added in a blog for please_try_again's VBoxLive you can read here:

VBoxLive - Version 1.0.2 with ISO Listing and Extensive Help - Orginal script by please_try_again - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

You should look at this thread as well if you use VirtualBox:

automatically recompile kernel modules after kernel update

I also had questions about VM's here that might be interesting...

What VM do you recommend for openSUSE?

    Thanks for reply
There is no problem with system changes, I can easily install 280 driver back, it is just the fact that packagekit downloads packages it feels like, without asking for permission or looking at package status. I don't know whether I should report this as a bug, or it is how it is supposed to function.

I seriously dislike packagekit, so I uninstall most of it (there are some dependencies that have to stay). I do everything through YaST Software Manager or zypper.

    Just my 2 cents

Yes, it is a known bug of packagekit. It ignores taboo marks.

Huh, if I remember correctly, it even resets tabooes. I'm unsure.

As a general rule of thumb,
the "275" series nVidia drivers are the Dev drivers. If dev components, particularly relating to CUDA are detected then you'll probably get the Dev driver.

    As I understand it,
