    not just kde
    Not sure if it's relevant...but my KDM shows two "KDE Plasma Workspace" entries, and one "KDE Plasma Workspace (failsafe session)".

    I just checked the repos again and nothing's changed since last night. Did someone mention they are still in a state of flux?

    I also tried the Alt-F2 thing...but that didn't work either.

    ....sure is. just saw on the mailing list that the blak screen appears only
    with desktop effects enabled. tried it, and w/o effects KDE 4.7.1 works
    fine.

    You are using KDF then?
    Pardon the newbie question...but what is "ML"? I'm guessing KDF means "KDE Factory".

    The repos I am using are:

    * Core packages: //download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_11.3/
    * Extra: //download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/
    * Unstable: Playground: //download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Unstable:/Playground/openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/

    Is there a different repo set I should be using? I know there are risks when using factory builds...but this is the first time something this major has occurred.

    Is there a config file I can edit to disable desktop effects?

    things have changed from what i remember from earlier. in
    ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc there are settings to en- or disable the
    separate effects,but after disabling all effects via systemsettings
    (running awesome WM), i find that these options haven't changed in kwinrc.
    the most likely candidate seems to be ~/.kde4/share/config/kdeglobals,
    with this entry:

    ---------
    [KDE-Global GUI Settings]
    GraphicEffectsLevel=6
    ---------

    (the above setting is what i have after disabling effects globally, via
    GUI.)

    just read this on the opensuse-kde mailing list, by ismail doenmez:

    Please also report your gfx card model, also make sure you don't enable
    other repos like X11Org (just in case).

    P.S: I am busy with openSUSE Conference 2011 ATM, expect delayed updates
    until next Friday.

    i've got X11Org enabled, but am not going to remove that; rather wait a
    while w/o effects.

    ML = Mailing List/s

    Really I would recommend
    Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/47/openSUSE_11.3
    Leap 15.1_KDE
