KDE 4.7.1 Update Issues

Hi,

I just performed a KDE update from 4.7.0 to 4.7.1 on my OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit machine and my desktop is in bad shape: the plasma stuff doesn’t seem to work at all…and I don’t have any panels…the default one on the bottom of the screen is gone also.

I tried creating a new user in Yast, but when I log in I get a blank black screen. KDE seems to be pooched!

Anyone have an idea what might be wrong?

Thanks,

Jim.

Make sure you choose the session

kde-plama-workspace

not just kde

When I look in the repositories, I see only a few packages upgraded to 4.7.1. A lot of them are still on 4.7.0. (I have refreshed). How come?

I think it’s related to what mirror you’re connecting to at the time. Some repos take more time to sync than others - and many times I see a lot of red packages in repos that before where blue/black, as if a package was in the repo and then it got removed somehow.

I’d wait a few hours and try updating again. You can do this using yast in a terminal if the GUI isn’t working.

Not sure why my previous reply does not show-up for me.

Anyhow. I get a black screen as well after updating to the 4.7.1 packages from KDF for 11.4. The applications etc. are started though, i.e. the cursor changes when hovering a text field or one can start new applications by ALT+F2.

I do use the KDE plasma-workspace session so I do not think it’s that issue. And in the meantime all packages in the repo are 4.7.1.

I see this reported in the ML
Perhaps you are one and the same

You are using KDF then?

i am, and while i updated a few hours ago successfully (no black screen or
the like), i’m getting another 200+ MB update now. seems the repos are
still in motion, and it may be best to wait a few hours more for those who
haven’t started their updates already.

Is 4.7.1 only available from KDF? I’ve found some 4.7.1 packages in KR47 but not sure if it is ready or not for a complete KDE upgrade.

i remember reading that KDF would come first, followed by KR47. not sure
if KDF is fully updated already or still in motion.

As eager as I am when new versions come out, I’ve found it prudent to wait a day or two for the repositories to sync before updating something major like KDE.

good policy. i just finished the second part of my update (KDF), and now
i’m getting a black screen too. something’s wrong ATM. awesome (WM) time
again…

My KDE laptop is waiting to go in the shop for a DC connector repair.
So I’m using a gnome machine ATM

Sounds like fun for you folk :smiley:

Not sure if it’s relevant…but my KDM shows two “KDE Plasma Workspace” entries, and one “KDE Plasma Workspace (failsafe session)”.

I just checked the repos again and nothing’s changed since last night. Did someone mention they are still in a state of flux?

I also tried the Alt-F2 thing…but that didn’t work either.

Yes, me too
Been that way some time using R47

…sure is. just saw on the mailing list that the blak screen appears only
with desktop effects enabled. tried it, and w/o effects KDE 4.7.1 works
fine.

Pardon the newbie question…but what is “ML”? I’m guessing KDF means “KDE Factory”.

The repos I am using are:

* Core packages: //download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_11.3/
* Extra: //download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/
* Unstable: Playground: //download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Unstable:/Playground/openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/

Is there a different repo set I should be using? I know there are risks when using factory builds…but this is the first time something this major has occurred.

Is there a config file I can edit to disable desktop effects?

ML = Mailing List/s

Really I would recommend
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/47/openSUSE_11.3

things have changed from what i remember from earlier. in
~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc there are settings to en- or disable the
separate effects,but after disabling all effects via systemsettings
(running awesome WM), i find that these options haven’t changed in kwinrc.
the most likely candidate seems to be ~/.kde4/share/config/kdeglobals,
with this entry:

[KDE-Global GUI Settings]
GraphicEffectsLevel=6

(the above setting is what i have after disabling effects globally, via
GUI.)

just read this on the opensuse-kde mailing list, by ismail doenmez:

Please also report your gfx card model, also make sure you don’t enable
other repos like X11:XOrg (just in case).

P.S: I am busy with openSUSE Conference 2011 ATM, expect delayed updates
until next Friday.

i’ve got X11:XOrg enabled, but am not going to remove that; rather wait a
while w/o effects.
