    1) how are you setting up your distributions lists? From kmail or as
distribution groups under contacts. I have problems with 4.6.5
distribution lists under contact, they just have blank cards when looked
at in kmail 1.13.7. (KDE 4.6.5).
I had the same problem with 4.6.5 and that is why I decided to run 4.7. It is possible to create the lists in Kaddressbook under "New Group" or in Kmail2 with "Save list". I have tested both methods and they work.

    2) are you actuall running KDE 4.7 with the 4.6 version of kmail.
    KMail
    Version 4.7.0
Using KDE Development Platform 4.7.00 (4.7.0) "release 6"

I do not know if old distribution lists are imported because I deleted them before I started my vacation - new students every year. :-)

in kmail configuration (settings -> configure kmail), under the 'composer'
tab / general you can configure 'completion order,' i.e., where kmail gets
    email addresses for auto-complete for.

in spite of that, during earlier stages of kmail2 under KDE 4.7, mine
would suggest only from recently used addresses; a little later the first
akonadi resource was being used, too. now it's using all the resources i'm
telling it to. BUT i'm using KDE 4.7 from KDE:/Distro:/Factory, and i'm
not sure if these fixes have been applied to the stable version too.

I had tried this already, but to no effect.

I'm not using the Factory repo. Maybe that's the cause, but I suppose that other people would have experienced the same in that case. I'll wait a bit to see what happens in the future.

    Thanks a lot anyway.

Initially I thought I had the same. I guess because this feature is now fueled by akonadi, it changed behavior. In fact the feature works, but other than expected. In the old kmail, typing stuff would resolve into suggestions. The more you typed, the less suggestions. They seem to still use this algorithm for "recent addresses". For entries of my address book, I have to type the correct first word of the entry and it appears in the suggestions. I guess they do a SQL query into the akonadi database. Beforehand, the results for my 1000 contacts were instant. Now it takes a while until the suggestions from the database appear. As I had the expectation from beforehand, I did not wait the 10+ seconds that it takes before akonadi reacts resulting in the belief that it doesn't work while it was only slow and waiting for the exact match.

So this sounds like a bug report would be in order as serious optimization of the akonadi behavior is needed. Also, try to take your address book and re-import it as a new address book. Because this way it gets into akonadi and into the optimizations (cache). Note that in this case you should not erase your old address book but just use (tick) one or the other to avoid duplicate suggestions.

So kmail2 in KDE 4.7.2 from the KR repository (don't mix the repos!!) works for me so far. It is slower than KDE 4.3. and akonadi hasn't yielded any improvement for me as an end-user -let alone comparison with KDE 3.5-, but the development is only at a starting point.

What I still can't figure is that kmail2 greys out mailboxes in my KMaildir. If I add them as normal maildir, I can access them (outside the KmailDir tree). So the KMailDir akonadi module still needs serious work.
