Thread: pdfs in in firefox don't display reliably

Default pdfs in in firefox don't display reliably

Ok this is a problem that has dogged me for years but I was hoping it was fixed in 11.4

Using the acroreader plugin pdfs sometimes work but most often they result in a white or black blank screen and once one pdf has failed then they all fail until I restart firefox.

It is a huge pain - under kubuntu I have used mozplugger to display pdfs with okular in the browser but this doesn't seem to be in the repos.

    So...

I don't think it is just me, all the people I know using suse seem to have this problem but it never gets fixed.

Any ideas how to get pdfs reliably displayed in firefox?

    years?

so, what you write there causes me to assume you have an earlier version
of openSUSE (which?) or another distro (which?) on that computer...so, i
have to wonder how you got to 11.4...did you do an upgrade? or a fresh
format and install? in either case did you keep an existing /home
partition and let the installer join it into the new 11.4?

i ask all of that because i made an initial, clean install of 11.4 here
a few months back and pdfs in firefox "just worked" (with either adobe's
    pig or okular)..

so, i ask those questions becuase i _think_ maybe you brought forward
some 'junk' that you don't need...

to check that, just use YaST to add a new test user, log out and then
back in as the new test user and see if the problem goes away..

most of the people i know have no problems with pdfs...and, i'm pretty
sure yours can too...once someone figures out what 'junk' you have
    gumming up the works..

and personally i don't recall a problem with pdfs in a very long time
    (5+ years)...

    Ok...

I am using a fresh install of 11.4 on a stand alone machine, although in the lab I have the same problem (as do my colleagues) on a network of machines running 11.0-11.4. The problem has been around for a long time such that I can't remember when it started and it is of the low level nuisance value that means we just usually remove the acrobat plugin and view pdfs externally and have never bothered to submit a bug report.

    However it is a pain.

I have been using several add ons (abp, firebug, greasemonkey) but these aren't installed everywhere and i have the same pdf problems everywhere so I don't think this is related.

The problem is _not_ linked to a particular pdf. Any particular pdf is fine sometimes but not others.

Once the problem occurs it spreads to all tabs / windows containing pdfs and lasts until firefox is restarted.

I examined the "junk" option - I have had the same /home for many years migrating over many discs and in the lab we have a central file store over nfs which goes back a long time.
So started with a fresh .mozilla tree since nowt else in /home should make any difference, but the problem soon reoccurred.

    An additional symptom is this:

    ps aux |grep acro
    trivet 8744 8.3 0.0 0 0 ? Z 20:32 0:43 [acroread] <defunct>

So it would appear that for some reason acroread has quit and is in a zombie state. Quite possibly it has crashed but the plugin has not detected it and this would explain why all the tabs go blank and new pdfs are affected until firefox is restarted.

I read a lot of pdfs over the web so this problem happens every day for me.

DenverD mention using okular, in firefox? how? like I said I use mozplugger in kubuntu on another computer which works but has a few glitches, however it is preferable to the current situation...

    Firefox > Prefs > Applications
    SUSE Paste

this displays the pdfs externally but I wish to display them inside firefox.

mozplugger can do this (okular inside firefox) but isn't in the suse repos.

I can confirm the problem. Several computers, several versions, several
installs. However, you do not need to restart firefox, just kill the wrapper.

Do a "ps afx | less -S", and find the acro-something plugin under the
    firefox tree of processes.

    Code:

    > /bin/sh /usr/bin/firefox
    > \_ /usr/lib64/firefox/firefox-bin
    > ...
    > \_ /usr/lib64/firefox/plugin-container /usr/lib64/browser-plugins/npwrapper.nppdf.so -omnijar /usr/lib64/firefox/omni.jar 7900 true plugin
    > \_ /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/npviewer.bin --plugin /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/nppdf.so --connection /org/wrapper/NSPlugins/nppdf.so/21160-1
    > \_ /usr/lib/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread --display :0.0 -progressPipe 3 -exitPipe 4

You have to kill acroread there and the parent processes, the 3rd line from
    the end.

I too have had this problem in Firefox since a couple of distros ago (can't remember exactly). It seems to be completely random, some work, some give a black blank page, some give a white blank page. Nice to know (thanks R_L) that there is a particular process that resets the view without killing Firefox.

    sorry!

actually, i misunderstood your problem...i do not use acroread _in_
firefox, i always either download the PDF and then open it externally
(most often with faster okular, sometimes with acroread if required to
(say) fill in some blanks) and then decide if i want to keep the PDF or
    trash it..

alternatively i have FF call one or the other readers for external reading..

lets face it ff has enough problems without trying to run anything
Bloated Adobe writes (like Flash, for instance)...and, anyway external
is usually trouble free....which meshes perfect with my Rule One:

    Use what works.

I was on the same line of thought DD
    And agree with your comments.

I don't ever have any trouble with .pdf files. But then I don't look at many, perhaps a dozen or so a week.
