Thread: KDE 4.6 on 11.3

    Default KDE 4.6 on 11.3

    Hi all.

Maybe it's a dumb question, but is it safe to update KDE from 4.4 to 4.6 on 11.3 x64? Or should I just update to 4.5? Are there some bugs/errors?
    Thanks.

I decided on one machine to update kde directly from 4.4 to 4.6 on openSUSE
11.3 and did not see problems until now on another machine I went from 4.4
to 4.5 (because I updated that machine earlier when 4.6 was not available)
and later to 4.6 also without problems (also 11.3), both are 64 bit.
So from that experience I would say - yes it is safe regardless of going
    through 4.5 or not.

I have KDE 4.6.5 installed with openSUSE 11.3 (albeit 32-bit) without any issues

    Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.3

Well, it's the first time I try to update KDE version and as a newbie I'm quite confused...

I imagine the first step is replacing the KDE core packages repository I currently have with the one deano_ferrari mentions and then replace all packages to this repository's version. Am I correct?

But then what about the UpdatedApps repo (http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...enSUSE_11.3/)? The Upstream Release KDE 4.6 repos don't include it! Or is it that the same UpdatedApps repo is also compatible?

Also there's a different KDE 4.6 Extras repo for Upstream than the KDE 4.6 Stable one. Why?

Finally, what is the PIM-46 repository for?

    Thanks for your help.

I don't use the update repo for KDE.

    A small review:

openSUSE 11.3 with KDE 4.6 (mini review)

This is for openSUSE 11.4, but still relevant to openSUSE 11.3 (point to the corresponding 11.3 repo instead):

    SDB:KDE upgrade - openSUSE

I just have one doubt: which KDE 4.6 Core repo must I use, the Stable or the Upstream release one?

Your link says Upstream is unsupported, but here says it's fully supported and the recommended one to use.

You can learn much by adding the repos and try applying the switch.
    I never use updated apps.

    I would say use:
    Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4
    and
    Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/46:/kdepim46/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.4

The kdepim will solve some of the issues you experience when you first apply the switch on R46.

    So the method:
Add both repos, apply the switch on R46, cancel the error box
Apply the switch on thee PIM repo too

I have some images to guide:
    Switch R46= http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/KDE_R46/R46_errors.png
    PIM 1= http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/KDE_R46/pim_errors.png
    PIM 2= http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/KDE...ors_select.png

Thank you very much for your help, mr. Caf (just when you appear I feel a bit more relieved). I'll try it.

EDIT: some final questions just arouse, because I'm still a bit confused:

So should I really use KDE 4.6 Upstream Release repo? I have the KDE Stable one, which seemingly also upgrades to KDE 4.6, and when just applying the switch just as a test, I didn't notice any packages to be uninstalled or conflicted (with a red cross, like your example).

Then, what is PIM-46 repo for? Just for solving the conflicts I get when applying the switch on R46? If I cancel the error box no changes will be done at all...

Finally, should I then delete the updated apps repo? And what is the Extras one for?

Forgive me for too many questions. But I really appreciate your help. Thanks.

11.3 may differ form 11.4 in my example
Perhaps you should post your current repo list

If you can switch without PIM, I would.
