Default Running Firebird-Superserver on OpenSUSE 11.4

Having installed Firebird-Superserver and it's dependencies via YAST2 software management I don't see fbserver in xinetd. I also installed Flamerobin, which is unable to connect, and Firebird-doc but unfortunately I don't know where to look for the installed documentation.
    If I log in as root I can run the command;
    Code:
    gsec -user sysdba -password <password>
but from there I can't communicate with localhost as I get the following error
    Code:
Unable to complete network request to host "localhost".
Error reading data from the connection.
Any help will be much appreciated.

    Best wishes
    Michael

sorry, i can't help with everything (or much of anything), but just a
    little maybe:

installed documentation almost falls in only a few places:

    /usr/share/doc/[application name]
    /usr/share/doc/packages/[application name]

    otherwise
locate doc | grep [application name]
    should give good clues

some will be plain text files but others full html with hyperlinks..

what do you mean: open a terminal and log in as root *or* log into
    kde/gnome/etc as root ?

are you working on the local machine, or across a network?

    Hi DenverD,
    Thanks for your reply.
Thanks for helping me find the docs, they are where you stated '/usr/share/doc/packages/firebird-doc/'. I will get a look at these now (if at first you don't succeed, read the instructions).

Running gsec only works if I log into KDE as root and open a terminal. It will not work in terminal when logged in as user even with su:
    Code:
    michael@linux-strc:~> su
    Password:
    linux-strc:/home/michael # gsec
    bash: /usr/bin/gsec: Permission denied
    linux-strc:/home/michael #
I am working at the local machine.

    Thanks once again. Kindest Regards
    Michael

please do not do that! it is never a good idea.

try it with "su -" (cite: http://tinyurl.com/ydbwssh)

    Hi DenverD,
    Thanks again for your time.
I re tried with "su -" as you suggest and now I can run gsec from terminal as a user:

    Code:
    linux-strc:~ # gsec -user SYSDBA -password <password>
    GSEC> display
Unable to complete network request to host "localhost".
Error reading data from the connection.
    GSEC>
However as you can see from the above there is another problem I will have to overcome before my firebird database is usable.

    Best Wishes
    Michael

ok, always use "su -" on openSUSE...otherwise you don't get root's
    environment (path)..

    > Unable to complete network request to host "localhost".

...that error above looks like a networking problem to me..

but, i'm not a network guru and don't know how to solve it...you may
need to attract one, they hang out over the networking forum:
    http://tinyurl.com/4nk8692

do you have a loop-back to localhost 127.0.0.1 set up?

WAIT! do some reading (you are not alone!):

    Hi,

tried to install firebird-superserver on a default suse 11.4 installation.

setup went without any issues, however i am not able to start the database:

    #/etc/init.d/firebird start
Starting FirebirdCould not open /usr/lib64/firebird/run/isc_guard1.h1958683 for write
startproc: exit status of parent of /usr/lib64/firebird/bin/fbguard: 253

if i touch the file /usr/lib64/firebird/run/isc_guard1.h1958683 by hand, the startup script runs without errors, but the database is not started at all.

Anyone has a solution to this?

I mean its suse default, i think this should work out of the box, or at least give me some information on which settings i have to adjust so this **** comes up.

on my (12.1, but IIRC this was the same on 11.4) system, the "run" folder is a symlink to /var/run/firebird ....

To correct some assumption: firebird is not an openSUSE default, i.e. not made by openSUSE, just packaged.

ok but i was under the impression that, after i install a package via zypper or yast, and i don't get an error message, and the files are where they should be.

that i should be able to start this package, and if something is missing i get an errormsg / hint of some kind.

and yes, the folders are symlinks, but whats the point ?

I don't want to argue, i just want this firebird database to run, and i really don't have a clue right now whats the problem.
Documentation on the homepage doesn't help me here.

I uninstalled ( and deleted what was left ) the firebird-superserver installation.

After that i installed the normal firebird database.

This one is only startable through /etc/xinet.d but anyhow, now i have a listeing process on tcp:3050, but this could be only the xinet.daemon , i dont know ( did not strace it ).

I am still not able to connect to the database at all.

    errormsg this time:

    cannot attach to password database.

The database is there and i also changed its accessrights to 777 just in case ... nothing changed.

Does anybody of you guys have a running installation, and perhaps could give me a hint ??

well, for some strange reason its working now, i did just again uninstall everything firebird related stuff and reinstalled the firebird-superserver package.

i am now able to start && connect to the database .... wired ??
