Default After update no sound Intel ICH7

Technically it is a Realtek chipset I believe.
Worked fine under 11.2. Any ideas how to fix?
In the old days would just run alsaconf but I'm
sure that is passe' by now.

Well the sound is now under the control of PulseAudio. You might want to see if the PulseAudio Volume is installed (pavucontrol) and make sure your output device is just not muted. I also suggest a visit to YaST / Hardware / Sound and make sure your sound device is configured and if you have more than one found device, that the primary one is setup as device zero and used by default. I have a bash script file called START you might find useful in testing out your sound here:

Is this 'Realtec' chipset the ONLY sound device on your PC ? No web cam mics nor other mics?

What this 'update' you referred to? One can update 100s of different things. Was it an update on 11.2 ? Was it an update to 11.3 ? to 11.4 ? 32-bit ? 64-bit ? Gnome ? KDE ? Xfce ?

If an update to 11.3 or 11.4 , how was the update done ?

    Yes. only sound device.
when update first completed it said there were 4 devices and asked to remove
the 'legacy' controllers I said ok.

    Sound problem solved.

Ran alsaconf which for some reason launched Phonon.
Exited session which would not close by going to a shell
and running init 1. After logging in as root I ran init 5
Logged back in, sound works. Goofy but it worked.

A distro update is done with "zypper dup" not "zypper up"!

Not sure what you want to say, but I guess that you used zypper up is most
probably the reason, why we see in your other thread (KDM problem after
update) that you have a nasty mixture of 11.2 and 11.4 packages (and we do
not speak here about some exotic packages but essential parts of the system,
at least your X server is still the version from 11.2), follow this and fix
    it

    http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:System_upgrade

at the moment you are curing symptoms without fixing the root cause. If you
do not fix that mixture everything you do now is most probably doomed to
stop working sooner or later when your system tries to do the standard
    updates.

No worries, zypper dup is running.
    Should be fixed up shortly.
