    Default KDM problem after update

    Updated from 11.2 to 11.4.
At KDM GUI login I am getting error, evere error
contact your administrator and am unable to login.
Trying different DE's yields same result.

However, if I select Menu>Console login and login,
then do a 'startx' the DE environment launches just
    fine.

    Any ideas?

I have had similar issues first time logging in after updates on occasion.

At the GUI Greeter screen (login GUI), try explicitly selecting Session Type-KDE Plasma desktop.

Seems some updates leave no "default" session type set; this has helped me.

I cannot explicitly select any of the session types, they all give the same
error. Only way to get to a desktop is Menu>Console Login, after login type
    startx.

Since you updated from 11.2 I would check if your repositories are all 11.4
now by reviewing the output of
    Code:
    zypper lr -d
as first step. Then check the version of your kdm with
    Code:
    rpm -q kdm
    as a second step.
Also a "zypper verify" as root can find if there are some inconsistencies
and will try to provide solutions if it detects them. But try that after you
checked the repositories that there are no left overs from the previous 11.2
    install.

No help in kdm.log which is what the error says to check.

This is not a X server version from 11.4!
Seems you have a mixture of 11.2 and 11.4 now.

    No idea why though.
In any case it is working.

Thanks. zypper verify allowed me to pinpoint the source
of the problem. I had install Novell Client 2 for Linux
and it was missing a libfd.so something or other. I just deinstalled
the client and it has fixed my kdm issue.

I still cannot launch 'Software Repositories' or 'Software Management' apps
    per my other post.

For the record here is current output of zypper verify:

    zypper verify
    Loading repository data...
    Reading installed packages...

Dependencies of all installed packages are satisfied.

I just made a fresh install and:
    - After a first kde4 update I discovered two identical "kde plasma" entries where the upper one is "dangerous".
    - By the next kde4 update I loosed additionally the standard skin getting a windows 98 look.for kdm.
    - In my RAM they are two separate kdm entries and I doubt a bit about the correctness of such a procedure.
    - Sometimes, after logging out, I will be asked for the root password in order to shut down.
