Thread: How to upgrade to firefox 5?

Default How to upgrade to firefox 5?

I'm a total linux newb. I tried messing around with yast, but the farthest I could get was upgrading it from firefox 4 beta to firefox 4.1 or something (I just installed openSUSE 11.4). I was wondering if I'm missing something? I also clicked on yast, searched "firefox", then clicked "upgrade" but still nothing. Thanks and sorry if it's a dumb question.

ps- When I was looking around openSUSE, I noticed a little icon that looks like a gear with a green arrow show up at the bottom. I clicked it and it said updates were available. I was wondering if this also checks for updates automatically for various software I have installed or just for the OS?

That gear thing is the updater applet. But don't use it. Right click it and configure it not to start a boot.

Please use: Yast > Software > Online Update

For package management, use Yast > Software > Software Management

IMO: Looking to get FF5 is the last of your worries. Learn how to use the OS first or you'll be in a right mess.

Thanks for the tip. I'll do that right away. Is there an issue with the updated applet?

It's actually installed on an old laptop, I'm just doing this to learn and get familiar with linux/openSUSE. There is nothing important on that laptop. I just installed it and doing the updates now ... gonna use this as a learning experience before ever making the switch to linux.

Please do the following in a terminal:

    Code:
    su -
    zypper rr 2
    Code:
    zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_11.4/ mozilla
    Code:
    zypper ref
    (a) to accept key if asked

Now close the terminal and open Yast Software Management
We need to view by repo and switch to mozilla

Thanks, that worked! I'm now running ff5 on the laptop. I installed the repo using Yast just to learn then followed your instructions. I'm happy to finally be learning how to use linux after all this time. I notice you wrote a guide "Repository Management" ... I'll make sure to check it out right now since as a Windows user, repos are a new thing to me. thanks for your help.

    You are most welcome
Just be careful to keep your repos to a minimum.
