Thread: Wine not opening some windows programs

Default Wine not opening some windows programs

    Hi

I have an issue with Wine.

Some windows programs won't run after I have installed them with Wine. They either won't run or they make the screen go to a black painting screen (screen goes black and you can paint over it with your mouse to make the desktop reappear).

I have tried changing the windows version and made no difference. I have even tried opening it in a virtual window and made no difference (Window opens then closes).

    Opensuse 11.4 Gnome

    Any suggestions?

Well, you can't expect every windows application to run under wine.
I'm afraid that some result in a black screen is detailed enough for us to help you.

What if this black screen appears when a program enters fullscreen and crashes?
A black screen doesn't tell you how it crashed.

You should tell us which programs you're trying to run, which versions of wine and openSUSE.
Provide the output when you run it from terminal.

You can also look for the program in the AppDB: WineHQ - Wine Application Database
Maybe someone else encountered the same problem and found a solution?

    Best of luck!
Where did I put my coffee cup?
    dir -R /home/* | grep "coffee cup"

Unfortunately WINE is not perfect and there are bound to be some apps that wont work with it.
Give playonlinux a shot though, as its a great front end and might help on some apps.

Vmware player - can install but won't open

Kapersky Internet Security - Can open installer and follow the prompts but clicking on the install button does nothing

IfranView - Double clicking on the install does nothing.

am i correct in assuming you wish to run Kapersky Internet Security
inside a VM or WINE in order to protect your openSUSE from invasion?

Have you tried looking for Linux alternatives?
VMware Player could be replaced with Virtualbox.
Kapersky Internet Security, not sure, SuSefirewall and a virus scanner?
IfranView can be replaced with Gwenview.

But if you really want to run these under wine I'm afraid it's going to be difficult.
Maybe this tutorial for IfranView helps: IrfanView 4.10 on Linux with Wine | Wine Reviews
It's quite old, so it might have changed over time.

    Best of luck!

VMware offers a native Linux-Version, too.

I don't think Linux desktop needs AV software. But there are some linux AV programs (they detect mainly windows viruses, though).
AFAIK linux has about 1% market share on the web (client not server share). Less than iPhone.
So there is no point in writing viruses for it .. yet.
Not to mention it is much more secure (nobody runs DE as root user ).

I know Linux doesn't require anti virus. I have got avast installed on my laptop. It just seems interesting that you can run windows programs on linux. Now I know that some won't run with wine, and that probably is the same with playonlinux. I know Ifranview and Vmware are quite good programs and it will be good if they worked with linux. But I shall check out Gwenview and Virtual box.

Again: there is a native Linux version of VMware. But feel free to give VirtualBox a try; in my opinion it offers the best mixture of stability and usability with Linux as host (while VMware offers some more nice features, but is not quite as stable to use).
