[update from 11.1 to 11.4] run level 3 reached but inittab configured to reach run level 5

Greetings !

I played the apprentice sorcerer trying to install mysql workbench by my own and I ****ed up the system 11.1 by removing accidentaly some libraries and decided to jump on 11.4 by using the update feature from the DVD.
It worked all good (it seems at least: I didn’t lost any datas and all my servers are running ok) but there is no more X11 server (kde) running for the run level 5.
I checked the inittab file and it is set to 5.
I can log on root account and now I’m searching how to install kde on this new 11.4 system.

I didn’t yet tried the failsafe option at boot.

Is there a way to set up kde from the internet, my wifi connection is ok ?
I saw that yast was not installed nore zypper nore yum…

Do I first try another update to fix it (if possible) from DVD ?

Thank you for your enlightments and advices inadvance ^^

zypper in -t pattern kde4

No Yast or zypper is a bad install for sure. Updating from 11.1 to 11.4 is not in any way recommended. My adivse is to save your data and do a clean install. I doubt there is any path to a stable system in your case.

You are right… I tried to avoid to being forced to do a clean install, but it is never good to jump from so far and hope it will work without any problem… I’m just a little disappointed even if I never believe in miracles.

I will pass the next two hours to check where the config files are located for the different servers working on this computer (hopefully this is a test machine) and then attack the clean install.

There is no way out I’m affraid, I’ll wait for more informations… I’ll post the update logs if anyone found a way to bypass the clean install… (for knowledge only)

Thank you…

Well, this was the answer to the question “how to install kde on this new 11.4 system?”. If you don’t have a “new 11.4 system”, that’s another problem. I don’t like the idea of updating from 11.1 to 11.4 either … anf I don’t know how/if it works as I would simply not try it (a clean install is easier and cleaner).

I /guess/ you simply have the typical problem of many people, even those
doing a clean install off 11.3/11.4, that graphical video fails. This is
not really related to doing an upgrade, the upgrade worked. Simply do
whatever all those people do to get video back.

You simply may have a complication: the xorg config from the old version is
probably still there, and is incorrect.

What I do is cheat: I install another small partition with 11.4 fresh,
leaving the upgraded system intact. If it works, then use it as a source of
config files for doing the same in the upgraded system. If the fresh,
independent install also does not work in graphic mode (and many do not
work), then follow standard procedure.

Yes, and upgrade from 11.1 to 11.4 may be a bit risky, but that IS NOT your
problem. An upgrade from 11.2 to 11.3 might have had the exact same video
problem.

So, insist on repairing that little problem
