installing softwares in opensuse11.4

i am new to openSUSE.i want to install some softwares in it like vlc, google chrome.how to do it?please help me.

                                 THANK YOU

Generally in OpenSUSE software is installed using the Yast module (Find “Software Management” in the Gecko menu). Unfortunately not all software, that you mention, can be found there.

Generally a google search with the name of the software and “opensuse” will get you quite far.

Hello.

From my experience the safest way to add foreign packages is to first add in
Yast the repository which contains the package.
for this you go in yast/repository management/add/URL
and you add the URL of the repository (to be found with google)
for Google-chrome it is http://dl.google.com/linux/rpm/stable/x86_64 (or 32)

When this is done you use Yast to add the software as usual.

When it is OK you go back to repository management and uncheck “active” and
“automatic refresh” for the repositories you have just added.

This beeing said, I am not a specialist, just an old user of SuSE (since No
7).

Just use the install\remove software utility.

Open up the utility search for the program you want and if found the utility can download and install it for you. It searches through FTP servers for the software packages. If it can’t find it you can download the rpm package off the internet and set the utility to search in the folder of the downloaded package.
