GREAT....now anyone who googles into this thread with the same problem
can check latest status on the bugzilla..

    > Could not find it on LibreOffice Bugzilla.

didn't you (or someone) decide it was only on the openSUSE
version...anyway, if it is an upstream problem our devs will kick it up..

Also reported another bug where the info box that appears when mouse is over
Icon is all black and text unreadable. Also several other boxes are
    unreadable. See https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=720242.

that sounds like a video driver problem...have you tried to fix it?
or, if you turn off desktop effects ??

Yesterday I saved my document (it has always been .doc). Today when I make any change and then save it libreoffice crashes and reports this:

    #
    # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
    #
    # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x00007f6caba87494, pid=13404, tid=140105630484256
    #
    # JRE version: 6.0_22-b22
    # Java VM: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (20.0-b11 mixed mode linux-amd64 compressed oops)
    # Derivative: IcedTea6 1.10.2
    # Distribution: Dummy Product (x86_64), package suse-4.3.1-x86_64
    # Problematic frame:
    # C [libmswordlx.so+0x68494] ImportRTF+0x20074
    #
    # An error report file with more information is saved as:
    # /home/xxx/yyy/zzz/hs_err_pid13404.log
    #
    # If you would like to submit a bug report, please include
    # instructions how to reproduce the bug and visit:
    # Bugzilla Main Page
    #

[error occurred during error reporting , id 0xb]

Which is rather annoying. I can save it as odt but if I load and save it again as a .doc then libreoffice crashes again. Before anyone says "just use odt" the document is for submission to somewhere that only accepts .doc.

Any clues? (other than it is java borking).

I tried switching to sun java but ooffice said :

[Java framework]sunjavaplugin.so could not load Java runtime library:
    file:///usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so

    several times and then crashed.

After some pratting around selecting the correct JVM (toolsptions:jave did say it had the correct path already) I reslected the correct path and then libreoffice did this saving this file as .doc:

    #
    # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
    #
    # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x00007f25ff4c3494, pid=14815, tid=139802087708448

    #
    # An error report file with more information is saved as:

[error occurred during error reporting , id 0xb]

    Abort

libreoffice _can_ save as a .doc without trouble so long as this document is not the one I worked on yesterday.

Yesterday's document cannot be saved as .doc or .docx.

If I load and save the document in abiword then libreoffice can load (and save) it without crashing. Ditto kword (alhtough this doesn't reproduce the formatting nicely).

    i can't help you...sorry..

but of those who might be able to try, should they assume you are using
openSUSE 11.4 and LiberOffice 3.4, and what desktop environment are you
    using..

oh, and please say what changed in your system between yesterday when it
saved ok, and today when it did not....i mean, did you do _any_ online
updates yesterday? or change _any_ configurations either as this user or
    as root?

    Hi,

have you tried copying/posting the document into a newly opened one and resaving?

Actually fixed it by changing the defaults in Config Desktop --> Common
Appearance and Behavior --> Application Appearance --> Colors --> Colors -->
Tooltip Background and Tooltip text. When set to default Tooltip background
(Black) and tooltip text white does not work ( Bug:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=720242). Update to show it works
with other colors at least light blue with black text. Wii check it today on
    12.1 MS5 also.

thank you for your contribution to free and open source software in
