Default Epson NX420 printer drivers available?

I am looking for NX420 drivers - also,
where can I get an overview of how Linux handles printing?
I have never tried printing from Linux before.
    Thanks!

    Hi qawtbh.

Drivers for your printer are available from

Epson Inkjet Printer Driver (ESC/P) for Linux | AVASYS CORPORATION

Scroll down the page until you locate the 'epson-inkjet-printer-nx420' driver. Make sure you choose the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit rpm for your system. Click on it to donwload/install.

Once installed, fire up your browser and configure your orinter using the CUPS web interface utility

    http://localhost:631/admin

Enter your root credentials when prompted. Configure manually with 'Add Printer', and follow the prompts.

    I downloaded the file
    epson-inkjet-printer-nx420-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.i486.rpm
for my 32 bit system and I get the error "query is not valid"
Whe I trey to install the rpm I also get
    lsb >= 3.2 is needed

Where do I install the lsb rpm from?

    Thanks!

Did you attempt to install with the 'Install Software' option? This would have called the software manager, which should have taken care of any dependencies for you. Or did you simply download and use rpm command?

Anyway, what does the following command return

    Code:
    rpm -qa |grep lsb
    For reference, I get

    Code:
    rpm -qa |grep lsb
    openprinting-gutenprint-5.2.7-1lsb3.2.i486
    lsb-4.0-7.1.i586
    lsb-release-2.0-5.1.noarch
Use the YaST package manager to install if necessary. (It should be in the OSS repo).

    I get
    lsb-4.0-12.1.i586
    lsb-release-2.0-9.1.noarch
    epson-inkjet-printer-nx420-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.i486

Also - I installed using the method you suggested. It resolved
    the dependencies OK. But when
I print a test page I get a million blank sheets thru the printer.

I set up using CUPS and provided root password.
I think it's missing the PPD file. The rpm installed OK,
but I'm not sure where the NX420 ppd file was placed.
I guess I need to browse for it, since NX420 does not show up
on the list after the NX420 rpm installed.

Are you sure its not in the list? I just went through the exercise installing the same package, and now have a large number of Epson models available, (including 2 for the NX420). In any case, you can find them by browsing to this location /opt/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr/ppds/Epson/

Read the manual for anything you might have missed.

I was able to find Epson-TX420_NX420_Series-epson-driver.ppd.gz
    in the folder /opt/epson-inkjet-printer-nx420/ppds/Epson
But the author of the rpm fogot to un-gzip the file and that is
probably why it did not show up in the driver list (I'm guessing)
After I browsed to the Epson folder and selected the ppd file it loaded OK.

Thanks for your help. I might save the file
    Epson-TX420_NX420_Series-epson-driver.ppd for the next time
    I load Open Suse 11.4

You could also try the opensource driver at openprinting.org. I used it for my Epson with no complications. Your printer is listed.

Thanks Deano and Prexy for your help.
Linux install and setup has sure come a long way
since I took my first Linux Admin class in 1998. Back then
we built the kernel using a make file which prompted
for the hardware we were building against.

This new version of Suse 11.4 is really nice. It supports
my Lenovo wireless with not additional setup. Cool

I'm glad to see more companies supporting linux these days.
I recently installed UltraEdit for linux, which has been a long time coming!
I wish the printer companies would support Suse and Redhat. They
build drivers for Apple Mac, but not Linux !!! :-(
    Cheers,
    Bill

So, did you get your printer working ok?

It's getting better. HP, Brother, and Epson have good support for most models. (To a lesser degree, Canon and Lexmark). The Linux Foundation have also done a marvellous job with open source drivers.
