Thread: Suse 11.4 Installer Causes Reboot

Default Suse 11.4 Installer Causes Reboot

I am in possession of a new HP HPE-570f PC which I bought this morning.
This has AMD Phenon 1090T and AMD Radeon HD 6770 graphics card.
The OEM Windows 7 works fine.

When I try to install Suse 11.4 using same DVD that works on my other (older) machine, I see the Suse Installation screen from which I select "installation", then comes the "Loading Linux Kernel" progress bar. As soon as the progress bar gets to the end, the computer reboots!
Then of course I end up back at the Installation screen since the DVD is still in the drive.

Can anyone suggest a solution for this?

Try doing a 'check media'. It's entirely possible you've got a drive
problem (it does happen even with new equipment).

Well it plays a blu-ray with no problems.
I also burnt a large DVD, including verification, with no problems either.
    Thanks.

The problem was corrected by changing the RAID settings within bios.

System was setup for RAID, even though the basic windows install that came with the machine only had one (2TB) drive configured!

Changed bios setting to IDE and now the installation is progressing.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out.

I suggested doing a media test because I have a couple of different
machines I tried upgrading - one worked fine with the disc, and one
wouldn't read it at all. In my case, it was a combination of old DVD-RW
media and a slightly faulty drive.

I have seen this from HP (RAID set in BIOS) for no apparent reason, a number of times now, along with using their own version of EFI (instead of BIOS), and their insistence on using all 4 primary partitions for the windows install (in some cases).

Considering the effort I believed HP to be putting into Linux (their excellent printer drivers as an example) I've been a little disappointed lately, perhaps their effort is only for HP-UX?

Next time, when you see the progress bar, hit the ESC key. You will see
text instead, and hopefully you can get a clue when it stops or crashes.

It's almost a pointless question, but, if a vendor chooses to enable RAID (and fake RAID at that),when they install only one HD , and the EFI, and the '4 primary partition' thing, and it is more of an issue with this vendor than it should be, should we perhaps question why? Or perhaps not? For example, Is it wrong for them to attempt to control which OS is installed on their hardware?

Maybe they simply don't care how the bios is configured. It works for them,
windows installs. Why bother? If other system does not install, it is their
    fault.

It's possible, I will leave it there.
