Default services fail at boot - save to turn them off?

    Hi,

during boot-up on my desktop, running openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6.3, there are sometimes (not always) some failed services.

Most of the time it is postfix and some other service. Today it is just mcelog.

So when I switch to the first terminal by strg+alt+F1, I see that mcelog has failed.

The system is running anyway, so I wonder if it is safe to turn them off? I would turn off postfix and mcelog. Do I harm the system with that? Would it boot again, after I have turned them off?

Or is it recommended to let them stay as they are?

As far as I understood, postfix is just a mailserver, which would be used, if I would run a mailserver on my own. But I don´t. I just read mails, via IMAP...
    But mcelog? Whats that?

thank you in advance for shedding some light into this

    regards
    Steffen

Postfix receives system emails for you. It has a small footprint anyway measured in tens of MB so I would leave it alone. Not very much when your Chrome or Firefox is chewing up hundreds of MB in cached pages.

this mcelog seems to be a bit important then... so, yeah, I better leave it like it is.

    Thanks!
