Default How to install a .tar.gz file?

    I have downloaded soundconverter.1.5.4.tar.gz
In terminal I untarred it and ran ./configure.
    so far so good.
The next step seems to be "make"
    I get the message...
"make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop."
I tried make install which gives the message..
make: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.
What should I be doing now please?

Was there a readme associated with the package providing instructions?
../configure && make && make install often works, but is not always necessary.

    Good luck.

    Hi
    Can you use 1.5.3? It's here;
    software.opensuse.org: Search Results

Else check the changelog entry in the spec file and send the user an email and ask if they can update.

First read the readme as ab suggested.
Beside that if configure did not produce a Makefile the output of configure
told you for sure some error messages about missing dependencies, files not
    found or similar?

    Hi Malcolm
I've just tried your rpm package and it looks good. Just have to add an "mp3 encoder" now.
    Thanks for the help
