Looking for a document manager

i have a lot of text files, PDF’s, CHM’s that i need to arrange for easier access. right now i’m just “filing” them in directories.

I tried to use Calibre but it’s designed to use with eReaders, exporting to ebook formats. The biggest annoyance with Calibre is that it won’t open the document with it’s related application (PDF with a pdf reader, CHM with Chmsee and so on), but rather open a link in the browser.

Can any one recommend such software ?

In KDE Okular will open most formats if you set it as the default application for each format. However, whatever solution you find to organise them will probably be hierarchical in the same way as your file manager’s system. For example, I keep all the handouts I have written over the years in a folder called ‘Handouts’ which is then divided into topics which in turn are sometimes further divided.

In what way do you wish to manage them? I myself use Akonadi (via KRunner) for that, because it lets me search for a document not only by its filename, but also by its content - and it will use the application you have set when you open it. You can also add your own keywords for each file.

Yes, i should have explained that a little better…
I’m looking for a desktop independent solution, not specific for KDE ( i have a desktop running KDE but i also use a laptop running LXDE). What i would like to have is one “place” to manage all my document, hierarchical levels will make sense they are already ordered like that in the directories. I don’t want to use a desktop search, and not Web based.

If you find one I will be interested too. All document management systems I
have seen so far and run on linux were web based (the non-commercial ones).

Tellico (Tellico | A collection manager for KDE) look promising. But it’s for KDE. Maybe it’s time to get more memory on my laptop and switch to KDE…

I think you do not need to switch to kde to use it. It should be enough to
install the base kde libraries. I will give it a try on a vbox lxde system
and see if that works.

A first test on pure gnome (my wife’s laptop) shows it works there without
trouble (just tested a few imported pdf ebooks and articles and the search
in the online databases to complete missing details). It just needed a few
kde libs which zypper installed.

I checked on a fresh openSUSE 11.4 lxde (default, nothing special).
“zypper in tellico” adds about 130 MB of kde dependencies. If that is no
problem for you the software works like a charm afterwards. You can reduce
it a bit by “zypper in --no-recommends tellico tellico-lang” it reduces then
to about 60 MB.

that is awesome. thank so much. I installed it on my KDE desktop and it does look like what i was looking for.
