Hey, who reads the FM to start off anyway? Just jump in and get into trouble first.

    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=36536). So arch linux will
definitely not work on it, it makes really full use of everything which is
in the i686 instruction set, that is at least what I have seen myself when I
tried to use it with the AMD Geode LX 800 (kernel panic), whereas openSUSE
identified the cpu correct as not i686 compatible and used only i586
    packages.
It may well be that all distros mentioned above contain somewhere some
instructions not compatible with your K6.
Yes, that's the probable explanation. The distro devs would have to take some care to ensure that it runs on the stated platform (i[45]86). If they are not relying on an upstream distro like Debian, they will have to recompile their packages for that CPU, and then test. Testing would require an instance of the CPU, real or emulated. Somebody has to take the trouble to do this. Many small distros just let it slide and rely on reports. "Nobody reported it working on a 586 so I guess it requires a 686."

I have one K6 mobo hanging around. I don't have anything I really need it for and it would be a waste of time to even pick it up to play with it, but I'm reluctant to throw it out. So it stays in the cupboard and will eventually get thrown out anyway.

    Ha!

I installed that Linux with no mail list, no forum. I had Fidonet, though.
It took me close to a month to get graphics mode working right.

So, yes, indeed I read that book, from start to end! >:-)

I read many documents and howtos on how to partition disks for use with
linux, how to install lilo, how to type commands (how I hated emacs, even
    more vi).

    Interesting times :-)

I know that feeling. Exactly same situation here! Not to mention the Pentium II 266 Mhz I saved from the dumpster couple years ago, although that one is a real i686.
