Default Second DVD/CDRW not recognised by openSUSE

My computer has two optical disk drives but SUSE only recognises the newer one which is an NEC DVD/RW drive. The other one is older and both were recognised when I had Windows 7 on this computer. Can anybody help with this? Thanks.

What are you wanting to do with the second drive? Have you tried to say burn a disk in the second drive using k3b? If the older one is read only, you might have to designate it as the primary drive for CD or DVD reading to be able to use it. Consider that optical drives do go bad and if you have been in your PC lately, a data cable or power plug could have fell off. Also dirt and dust buildup in a drive can cause it to stop working. I have a thread about optical drives you can read here:

Multimedia Optical Drive Naming (ie /dev/dvd & /dev/cdrom) Howto in opneSUSE

    Thank You,

Hi James, Thanks so much for your help. I didn't have to try out your guideline with the multi-media drive naming but you got me thinking of looking at the physical setup inside the computer and I found both of my optical drives set to slave with the jumpers. I reset the newest one to master and left the other at slave. Both drives are now seen by the system. Thanks so much.

Ah so, the old master/save setting for IDE Optical drives. I have but one IDE CD ROM drive left as all new ones are now SATA. I used to suggest one look at that if you have two IDE drives, but just not seeing that so much these days. None the less I am happy to hear you found and fixed the problem. Good for you! Just let us know if we can help you in any other way, as in self help I guess.

    Thank You,
