Yea I know dirty fans 
I am thinking of doing a new install of 11.4 and then importing all my data from my current 11.3 installs /home/flamebait into the new install. I have six drives mounted on this system however and wonder how I should go about painlessly transitioning to the new install. Should I disconnect all the drives then bring them back in one at a time or leave them attached and set them up during the install? This is pain Iāll have to suffer at some point no matter what I do. What are your suggestions?
No I donāt have this data backed up I simply donāt have the space to do so. I wish I did.
how is it partitioned? Generally of plain partitions just be sure that all the partitions are mounted as you want and set to NOT format. If you have some fancy setup like LVM volumes let us know.
They are all ext 4 or ext 3 and no RAID or anything BIOS is set to IDE most have one partition.
One has a partition for backing up /home and has the swap partition.
/ and /home are a separate drive.
Well just for information I have an extra 30 Gig partition that I can use to install and test new OS I configure to not mount my home. When Iām satisfied that all is ok I rename the /home directory and set fstab to mount my old home partition at /home. I also still control boot from my old (ie donāt install grub boot stuff). Then when I fell good about it all I will reinstall grub to boot off the new. Now my old becomes my new and the new is current. and I have a place to test things for the next advance. This does require having setup that extra partition dedicated to the next new thing.

Right now I am leaning to buying a new drive and doing a install of 11.4 then dragging the stuff I need from my back up of /home and leaving my current drive with / and /home untouched. Then adding the other 4 drives one at a time.
