disk error grub stage 1.5

Every time I start my computer, I get a message saying

disk error
press any key to continue

I press any key, and the start-up completes without further problems. The first line on the screen after I press any key is

grub stage 1.5

I`ve looked on the web, and grub stage 1.5 seems to be where the size of the hard drive is identified. Problems often seem to be linked to partitioning. My hard drive has (since new) a 115GB and a 5GB partition. When I try to access the 5GB partition, I get the following error message:

failed to access the 5GB hard drive
the system responded

It seems strange that you have only two partitions on your system disk of those sizes. Much information is missing: please give us the output of

fdisk -l

cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

cat /etc/fstab

Stage 1.5 is the part of Grub installed in the 17 sectors (in openSUSE) directly following the MBR. It is not essential, because when you install Grub in a partition bootsector, there is no room for stage 1.5 and stage1 (the bootloader) loads stage2 from the / (or /boot) partition instead. Since you mentioned that you created partitions recently, the first thing to do would be to reinstall Grub.
